Its only been very recently that horn drivers could approach the low levels of distortions of line arrays and point source speakers at the same level. Most horn speakers the crossover are to low for the type and size of horn used so the horn acoustically decouples and spreads the sound everywhere defeating the purpose of a horn. Woofer horns maybe great for dynamics but accuracy is not at the top of the list with wandering centers of generation and lack of coming together in time with the mid range and if necessary a HF horn. Different horns in most speakers Q is different so the ear can easily hear the transitions at the crossover frequencies. Horns linearities can be great but most are not. Digitally corrected and tri-amped DD 67000 are way out of the price range of most listeners as our JBL's M2 digitally corrected and bi amplified monitor speakers. .
Yes, I prefer line arrays because of the low distortion and evenly controlled dispersions for frequencies where the ear is most sensitive to where the fundalentals of music are mostly contained. Yes new Horns speakers with advanced horn design engineering and drivers have really improved lately. Which is a very good thing. But if horn systems are so popular why aren't they used professionally like they once were. Because they have to many short comings. The short comings also apply to home speakers, . So we will have agree to disagree. Yes I don't listen to levels much above 105 db C weighted peak. I know thats where a Klipschorn is just getting to strut itself at 15 feet. But I have heard my speakers along side DD67000, Klipschorns, Cornwalls, 4367, 4430 and 4435, L300 and the Awful Paragon and Harts field. Altec Carmels, Valencias, Model 19's, 14's, Capistranos, Magnificants, etc etc. EV Paragons, 800 Paragons, 6's, Georgians and all their professional stuff thru the 2010. Yes, they all play loudly. But like most amateur musicians think if you can't play the music correctly try to playing it louder.
Yes, I agree in large rooms their isn't really anything out there that can do what a horn can do in a home. Its like saying the only car for me is that new dodge with the 1025 HP engine, When All I drive is 80 mph. I don't heed to get to 60 in under 3 seconds. Just because you might only need 10 watts with a horn speaker, and I might need 300 doesn't mean my amp has any less detailed or is less in control than the amp you have chosen. In fact my speakers more uniform impedance curve puts a lot less strain on my amps than most ported and horn loaded speakers will. I don't require as much voicing in my environment to reach my goals either. So as I have said before and will say again . To each his own, you like what you like and I will continue to like what I like. Yes I agree line arrays have become entirely to expensive is some cases. But Magnepans 30.7 is the same price as a Jubilee and they are about the same size. Wonder which sounds the best below 100 db. Yes it might take a 50 watts for the 30.7 and 1 watt for the Cornwall and less than a 1/3 of a watt for a Jubilee woofer section at one meter. But which will sound the best and disappear in the room sonically. Not that I am a Magneplanar fan but it is one of the ultimate line arrays. How about an IDS line array that does use not crossover using full range small LDHP drivers made in Europe. Yes its sort of dynamically challenged, but its another choice for a more advanced design. How big would a single straight horn have to be using a single full range driver in order to compete? If the horn were big enough and long enough it would be the ultimate answer. providing throat anomalies were corrected in a similar fashion to the Jubilees HF horn.
