Modern speaker upgrade, please help

I think you should send yours to me so I can demo them *wink*

By the way, I saw your setup and listening room. It should be featured in a magazine it looks so good.

GF has 30 home audition :) And thanks for the comment, it's appreciated. Anyway like we said previously, there is so many choice available out there that worth audition. I hope you will find a speaker that will make you satisfied as i am.

My RBS 1s are currently matched with the Grant fidelity Rita 880 and I love the synergy they share, both products are made by Jungson for GF. Before i acquired my Rita, the RBS 1s were being driven so sweetly by a Scott 299c. The RBS 1s sound very musical and have an amazing ability to both disappear and present sound much larger then their size would sugest. I truly enjoy mine and would them on par with many of the choices being suggested.

I left a message at Grant Fidelity this morning. I really want to talk to Ian because I am now very intrigued by the RBS-1, although it may be too much speaker for my small space. I do however think that maybe the little brother, the MBS-1, may be what I need and is less expensive. It shares the same good looks and quality build as the RBS-1.

I can also get the Usher tiny dancer as a demo purchase for $1600 from a dealer. Man, this is hard. I want something that I am willing to keep for the next 10 years.

Like I told JohnVF, speakers are like women; I want to try them all :D

Well, I've been trying a lot of both and have to say that I keep gravitating towards the examples of each that may not be the best in any category but that overall are just the least pain in the ass.

I'd love to hear back what you hear from Grant Fidelity. If I don't figure out a happy place for my Harbeths, I may go another route and I like the looks of those speakers. Or at least a route 'in addition to'. A speaker on the side, so to speak.

I did a search on the GF forum and read about a member named Guystp who demo'ed a pair of the RSB-1's and liked them. He ended up taking them back because he felt that they were "too much" for his small space He ended up taking them back to GF and getting the MBS-1's, which were perfect for his situation. His listening space is roughly the same size as mine.

Those highly regarded Harbeths have been on my scope for a while. I am not sure they will work for my purposes, though.

Ever thought about a kit? There's a bunch of them that will fit you application like the
Dayton Audio RS621CCK. The Daytons like most other kits consists of highly refined crossovers and and world class drivers that easily outclass the vast majority of those you get in off the shelf speakers.

I haven't read the whole thread so I have no idea if the OP bought speakers yet, or not!

Just wanted to mention he have a look at the Dynaudio Excite X16, or at a slither over budget will secure a pair of Dynaudio Focus 140.

If the budget was better I would suggest Lenehan Audio :D

I know that the kits are nice, but I really want a plug and play.

Nice looking speaker (Dynaudio Excite X16). What were your impressions?

For your sanity I would suggest approaching it as making one choice out of several great choices instead of worrying about getting it wrong. I mean, I love my Harbeths but I keep thinking "hmm....what else could I have done?" and that's just my personality, and its exactly why I'm not married.

I just spoke to Ian Grant from Grant Fidelity. I gave him a detailed idea of my listening room and current equipment. We talked for a good half hour discussing the merits and particular strengths of the RBS-1, MBS-1 and the LS3/5A. I may be leaning toward the latter based on our conversation. I don't have a lot of room to move my stands too far from the wall, which is a factor for me. With the LS3/5A's, I don't have to worry about that. He made the claim that the midrange is top notch, equal to the RBS-1, but that I will lose some bass extension. I think I will like any of the three, I just have to decide which of them that I want to live with.

I appreciate the fact that he gave me his time and thoughts. Another thing that he didn't do was steer me toward the most expensive option or try to sell me gear that I was not interested in. He will continue to get my business.

If you decide on a BBC style monitor I must say that the among those that I've heard the Harbeth's are by far the best. Most others who have heard most or all of them would concur. The good thing about them is the Radial driver and the slow roll off from 75hz to 35hz. They are also hand built in the UK by folks who make a living wage. That's not to say anything bad about Chinese made gear as I sure as hell don't want this thread to degenarate into that miasma...it is simply a fact with Harbeth that bears mentioning.

Which Harbeth's are you referring to?

Even if Jungson is "made in china" I am not ready to say it's like all other chinesse products. So as Harberh, Jungson is a well know brand who probably care about quality like any other audio compagny. USA, UK or chinesse, i guess they all have the reputation to care about.

I understand and like I said I don't want to turn this into a thread where we argue the merits of Chinese or other eastern manufacture. I own Chinese made products and have never had a problem with quality products from top Chinese manufacturers. In fact I've always argued that quality is quality and a lack of quality knows no international boundaries.

For my personal use I simply like the Harbeth approach to manufacture and being a part of their community. It's unique in todays world. Even at that, if they didn't build the world's best iteration relative to the evolution of thought around the LS3/5A I would still throw them under the bus. Speaker manufacture and/or audio manufacture isn't charitable work. I don't have 2k to give away just because they build speakers in a quaint English village. The speaker has to be damn good and then the story matters. Again, just my opinion.

I understand what you mean and i share your opinion. I am from Canada and there is a lot of good manufacturer here (Simaudio-Paradigm-Bryston-Totem-Focus Audio-Axiom) and i could tell many more. So why spend 5K$ on chiness products, well sometime i ask myself why i didn't chose Canada's brands. I do not have the answer, but i know i like what i hear when i listen music in my system, and that's matter :music:

ArtK: Go here for a nice review of the Grant Fidelity LS3/5A:

http://www.positive-feedback.com/Issue47/jungson.htm

Already read it.

Spent a bit of time on the GF website and researched the manufacturers, Jungson and Shengya.

Guys, I'm kind of obsessed with this stuff. I've read every review and listened to nearly every iteration of the LS3/5A legend. Will be listening to the latest Spendor release weekend after next in Portland...and with the Brio-R.
