While I did not know Zilch personally he helped me out on several occasions.
I joined AK asking some really dumb newbie speaker questions and within a
few months he had coached me through an e wave build. His vast speaker
knowledge is not hard to find. Just do a google search on about any JBL
question. You will be missed but not forgotten Zilch.
 
We have lost a one of our most generous and enthusiastic members. Just this summer Evan designed a crossover just for the specific components I wanted to use for my econowave, and no, I never met him.

I often wondered what he did or had done for a career and if it was audio related....
 
They say that a man really never knows how many lives he touches...Reading this thread, although so sad, really is beautiful. So many wonderful memories of Zilch.
What could I possibly add?

Zilch, thank you for your wealth of knowledge and your willingness to share your passion with us. You will be missed.

My deep condolences to his Family and those closest to him.

I didn't know that he was so sick and it's certainly a shock that he's gone. My condolences go out to those that were close to him in life.

Sultans on the E-Waves as I type... Today I decided to charge-couple the K-Waves, then tuned in to find this news. Speechless. Bummed to find out he was also a Porsche 914 guy, as that has been my hobby for a decade or more. I wish I had had time to visit the Z-Lab...

My Zilch Story

I was fortunate to meet Zilch many times over the past three and a half years. I met him when I purchased some Altec 604B "Hollywood" speakers back in the summer of 2007 and he offered to help me repair them. When I arrived at ZilchLab for the first time I was truly amazed by his collection of JBL and Altec speakers. That first visit really opened my eyes to how good a two way speaker system could sound. After leaving my mind was reeling of all the possibilities that lie ahead. When Zilch first joined AK some of his posts were controversial and not all members agreed with his opinions. While this was fine I got to see first hand how he had formed his opinions. Some members thought he had a hidden agenda and he did. To build great sounding speakers at an affordable price by the DIY'er. This all led to me building my ZD 007's with Zilch's help and guidance.

In the Fall of 2009 there was a NorCal speaker building club that had a meet. I met Zilch and Chris there and they brought along a couple of pairs of their speakers to demo. There were a couple of others members that brought their own eWave derivatives so the eWave community was well represented. Zilch got up and demonstrated his speakers and talked about the design and their "constant directivity". It was like watching a proud father talking about one of his children. :thmbsp:

Last Spring the group had a meet in the town where I live but I couldn't make it because I was traveling on business. I had promised Zilch that at the next meet I'd bring my ZD 007's so I felt bad that I couldn't make the meet.

While Zilch had heard the ZD 007's one at a time he never heard them together in a nice listening environment. This past September I gave Chris some motivation to visit my house and he brought Zilch along for the 100 drive. That afternoon we had a nice listening session and Zilch gave me a few suggestions on how to fine tune my speakers.

The best tribute you can do for Zilch is to continue the eWave thread and further his contributions to the design. Many of us have our eWave's to remember him by.

One last thing. I know Chris (WiredBecker) is missing his good friend Zilch right now. Chris was a great friend to Zilch and helped him out immensely this past year. We should all be so lucky to have a friend like Chris. :yes:

It's an amazing tribute to see a virtual community come together to mourn the passing of a cherished member that most (including me) have never met, but have all benefited from. It's both sad and uplifting.

RIP, Zilch.
 
I'm shocked...I also had no idea his illness was so grave. A very sad day for Audiokarma. He will be missed.
 
This is indeed sad news to hear.

I would glance at the 'Where's Zilch?' thread over the last few weeks hoping to see a post from Zilch, one that would restore the Speakers forum to its rightful place. It just didn't seem proper without him.

I'm deeply saddened by this news. I had great respect for Zilch, and felt he was one of the brightest, most memorable of the members we have here. Whether you agreed with him or not, he had a way of taking a conversation to another level.

I had a few exchanges via PM with him, and always enjoyed the conversation.

I'm gonna miss him for a long time.

I am so saddened by the news. Zilch was always so helpful to me. When I build my Indignias they will be dedicated to his memory. My condolences to his family.
 
I have a pair of OLA utility cabs waiting to be Econowaved. My thoughts will be with him during the project and the final product dedicated to him.

RIP Zilch... in speaker heaven
