Most overrated band

For me it needs to go back one step to the definition of what a "band" is.

Some bands have talented musicians
Some bands are great marketers of an image
Some bands have little talent but have great chemistry
Some bands have the look that attracts fans
Some bands have great songwriting abilities but the musicianship lacks
...you get the point.

So, for example if I were to say Kiss is an overrated band in my mind I might mean that they I don't think they are good musicians, but they were great at marketing themselves.

It all depends on the perspective we each bring to the table.

All great points but most people do not delve that deep into their own tastes. They are jaded for one reason or another and there are more dis-qualifiers than qualifiers.

I thought it had been too long since we had one of these "your music sucks" threads.

I'll play.

In order:

  1. Journey
  2. The Eagles
  3. Rush
  4. Celtic Women
  5. Josh Grobin
  6. The Ramones
  7. Toto

Led Zep. They MAY have been great in '68, but their stuff has been run into the ground, its been OVERPLAYED so much. Nirvana ? Weird Al said about everything that needed to be said about them in his "Smells Like Nirvana" send-up of 'em..Rod Stewart...Oh, yes, "Rod is God"....NOT !! But at least he's not been making a complete & utter fool out of himself of late...Unlike the Stationary Pebbles, who can't seem to help themselves...Look, English 1960s-70s rock gods...Guys...Pretending you're still young, hip, angry, rebellious 25 yr olds when you're actually 65-70 yr old millionaires is a SPECIAL kind of deranged...

Easily, most anything mainstream of today is overrated. As for the bands of past, I would also say the Beatles and perhaps add in the Grateful dead.

I can only speak to bands that were around in my lifetime, and with that in mind my vote goes to Pearl Jam. Seriously...one good record (Vs.), one decent record (Vitalogy), and a bunch of mediocre crap.

Runner-up vote goes to U2. I do not get why everyone still creams themselves whenever a new U2 record is released when the band hasn't made a good album in 20+ years.

Regarding Pink FLoyd. No, they are not overrated. A great group. I can understand how one might not like them. But their body of work is excellent as reflected by their popularity.

Overrated is garbage like Justin Bieber.

I would argue that an overrated band is going to be a has been in 5 to 10 years, i.e., Justin Bieber.

A great band (that some do and others don't like) that is not overrated will be popular years from their initial success.

Ok, I'll play:

5: The Kinks: sucked ass live
4: Grateful Dead: no acid no fun
3: Band of Gypsys: Where is my Jimi Hendrix and does this song ever end.
2: Kansas: cool album cover though
1: Red Hot Chilli Peppers: Too bad I cant mix everyone but Flea out of the tracks.

The Wail.......

I love Pink Floyd but I have to agree that they are a little overrated. "The Wall" may be my vote for most overrated album of all time. Roger Waters whining about his childhood for 4 sides? A little hard to take.
Arrgh, I had completely forgotten that one, it's like recalling an impacted tooth, I'll try to move on and forget it........

I totally agree with 2 exceptions: Celtic Women are totally hot, especially that one chubby blonde. Why anyone would pay money to see hot Irish chicks lipsynch is another issue altogether. The Ramones: maybe you haven't heard their first 2 albums.

The Chili Peppers were (are?) totally a waste of a good bassist. The lead singer Anthony Whatever makes me want to drive off a cliff.:thumbsdn:

All the the above +

The Electric Light Orchestra

Moody Blues

Kansas

Bob Seeger

Boston

anything on classic rock channels for the last 30 years or more. :smoke:

Nirvana may be over-rated, but they DID single-handedly wipe out hair metal- so they're okay in my book. I'll go out on a really thin limb and say The Stones. They have some great songs for sure- and I'm not hating on them, but... Their bad songs are totally intolerable, and they're the self-proclaimed "Greatest Rock 'n Roll band in the world....
I'll also say AC/DC. Not a bad band at all- but the formula has gone stale...
These ARE good bands IMO, just over-rated. I'm not even going to mention the ones that don't even rate... ;)
(Deezy is right about the Chili peppers, too!)

Whenever I hear "Old Time Rock and Roll" on the radio (every day at my freaking job) it makes me wonder: why don't they just play some damn old time rock and roll instead of this idiot warbling on and on about it?
