Music Documentaries to Watch

I love watching the Vienna Philharmonics New Year concerts. That concert hall has some of the best concert hall acoustics in the world. The Orchestra isn't quite as precise as Berlin in intonation and playing as a tight group, but the sound is so enjoyable that I can let little issues slip bye. Berlin with their digital broadcasts allows me to hear a wealth of music presented in concert for the last 15 years. But their concert hall and the use of so many microphones gives a overly sterile sound. A modern sound for sure. I guess thats why they have become such perfections because everyone in the orchestra and at home can hear the slightest misstep. If you watched Muti conduct Vienna last night he pretty much let the Vienna Musicians play the Blue Danube and the last march the way they wanted to perform the music. I couldn't believe he has been involved with thre Orchestra for over 50 years as Conductor, Principal Conductor and participating musician. No wonder why they follow his direction so well. Other directors they sometimes pretty much ignore doing their own thing. Watch Zuben Meta sometime. The orchestra is following the concert master and not Meta.
 
Well I have now watch 3 different versions of the New Years concert from Vienna. The one on You tube from Britain is by far the worst, The re-broad cast from PBS streamed on their website is a totally different mix from what I heard as transmitted by KRWG in Las Cruces. But I have experienced this before. The PBS rebrodcast has cleaned up and removed some of the mistakes of the Piccolo player for instance, a few French Horn flubs and first violin intonation problems. But by doing that they had to change from a more over all few mic mix, to a closer more detailed multi mic pickup mix. I still the prefer the first mix I heard from KRWG in Las Cruces even with the flubs.

One of the best I've seen is Chick Corea: In the Mind of a Master. Not only is he a musical genius but he is just a really likable guy! I also am looking forward to seeing this new doc from the same series on Stanley Clarke (Stanley Clarke: Forever).
 
Watched this the other night, pretty good doc on the early days of Punk and it's history with Reggae.

As told by a Don Lett's who was right in the thick of it capturing a lot of it on film, tape etc.
