Need to discover new music, feeling a bit lost

It seems to me that you have covered all the main genre out there that's worth listening too. The suggestions here are bands that fall within those that you have already been into. Really dude, there not much more out there new. That's why we have bands with members 70 years old still going strong. At least that my opinion. So look within a genre you really like. If its smooth jazz or hard rock then go there and enjoy that. I also have Spotify. It is a nice service to find new bands or just enjoy the ones that you like. ROCKON!

I won't recommend a band to you - cuz I can guarantee you probably won't like them, and your time will be wasted. I will suggest that you stream some college radio stations and just leave it on in the background while you do other stuff and take it from there. Here's what's on right now on a few dozen stations who feed their playlists to Spinitron. In fact right now one of my favorite stations is playing hairband goth metal which I absolutely hate but I'm too lazy to get off my butt and switch the stream - ugh they're doing a guitar solo. Shoot me.

Spinitron
.

Porcupine Tree

Been listening for a couple hours, I see the appeal but on the first go around for lack of a better description I think they are a little to Poppy sounding for me, going to give them plenty of time. I think it’s the vocals.
Edit: yep vocals, just enjoyed a couple live instrumentals.

Thanks for sharing!!!!

They run a wide course...and are one of those bands that have a definite identity and sound, but can change things up quite a lot from song to song. One really needs to listen to at least around half a dozen or more of their tunes in their entirety to get a feel for what they have to offer. And that happens to be quite a lot.

Glad you’re enjoying them.

I use Slacker and Amazon music as my streaming sources. If you have Amazon Prime, you've got a good source of commercial-free music right there. I tend to use Slacker when I want varied music, either with stations I've created or the pre-made ones and is where I do most of my 'discovering'. Amazon is good for playing entire albums, playlists of certain artists, etc.

well thanks guys ... now tomorrow,i will have to sit here and play all this for my GF
we have thousands of flac files, but we also like exploring

its really hard to believe, 90% of nights i have a good idea of what i'm going to play when i get home
but some times, i cant be bothered
i would rather listen than watch tv but sometime tv wins

turns out i have figured out that when i dont care about the music or it all seems boring:
i am physically burnt out
from RL and work.

a great fix for this turns out to be musicbee
i pay for jriver and their randomizer does nothing for me
but musicbee auto dj with all its settings nails it
i can here a random song i havnt played in yrs, followed by another and another
i like individual songs better than the individual albums settings [jriver is for albums]
but you can tell musicbee to do all individual and follow themes .. it figures it all out its self
to play all this by itself will take over 5yrs 24/7 :)

What you need is a source to be exposed to new content in the genre(s) you enjoy. That's why I'm a SiriusXM and Qobuz Studio subscriber.

I’m sure loads have heard of Dead Can Dance, but I only discovered them 2 weeks ago. HVe been playing this over and over!

Sometimes it is instructive to go completely outside your normal sphere. Perhaps try Blue Grass, Russian Orthodox Choral Music (great inteoduction to Basso Profundo), various types of ethnic folk music, Tangerine Dream, Chant or Plainsong...

In short something radically different than you run of the mill, post-modern, nihilism or hedonism.

Go bold. Go old. :)

I just quickly scanned the posts and didn't see any mention of "classical" music.

So many areas to explore, symphonies, quartets, operas, chamber music, concertos, works for solo instruments, etc.

Lust look at the works of one composer like Bach.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johann_Sebastian_Bach

Then look at his contemporaries, and those that came both before and after him, and you can fill a lifetime with music.

I love AC/DC and ZZ Top, but sometimes a little Vivaldi fills the bill, or a little Frederic F'in Chopin....

I get nearly all of my new music from the local College Radio Station.
I use an app on my phone (Shazam) to identify and then I explore the artist further.

No mention yet of Budgie so here you go. If you like heavy metal then why not listen to one of the originators of the genre before it was one lol.
