Oppo Digital Folding.

No to SACD - since there is a special chip that is needed for that and SONY will not allow it to be used in PC's.

So I know there's a hack for a 10x that will allow you to rip SACD... Yet another argument for keeping it forever. Am guessing said chip is not something you can buy from Mouser etc.?

The UDP-203 would actually solve one problem for me and that is to work as an HDMI pass through and route music from an Apple TV to my SX-1250 and act as a DAC. I need to see if there's any alternative.

Anyway, I completely agree about Oppo going out because of physical media being a dying market. They certainly could have got into the DAC market but I suspect that's much too small a pond for their corporate overlords to bother with. It's also not a brand name that really means much outside their current fairly small market.

I maybe wrong, but I think the hand writing is on the wall. Just as with Laser disc there was a realization that it was ridiculous to continue on with that format. With streaming and wide band internet, the CD has succombed and I predict the DVD isn't far behind. Now I will be very sad when the last CD is produced. They gave me many hours of great listening. I have to admit with DVD that nothing I have seen rebroadcast from the networks approaches the presentation from a great Multi disc player. But as in the past sometimes we have to take a step back to take many steps forward again. I always considered the cassette as a step backwards format. Though I loved my two Nakamichi units. They were good approaching excellent but never reached state of the art for the time. So I wonder what is being developed as the next new format that will last over 20 years that we can't live without. Economical thumb drives. Wonder how many years and how many potential customers will be lost as the 5" disc slowly fades from the scene.

Crown got out of the R2R market when they realized they would have to totally reengineer the product line, because mechanically and electronically their current designs couldn't be made to compete. Its like Caterpillar pulling out of the over the road market for their diesel engines because they could not be made clean enough, with out total redesigns. Cat and Crown didn't go away, they just had to regroup and move forward in other directions. A lot of people are concerned about Harmon. Will it be split up ? ? ?. Life goes on!.

I am sorry to hear this news. I regularly use my OPPO player to play SACD, DVD-Audio, DVD, CD and Blu-ray Pure Audio discs. The fact that it has multi-channel audio outputs, a feature that is only available on a few disc players, makes it compatible with my legacy multi-channel receiver. I hate to think of the time when there is no player available with the multi-channel outputs.

I watched my 4k bluray of The Last Jedi through my Xbox and then the digital stream on my same 65 inch 4k tv. Could not discern a difference from 10 ft away. So I completely understand the reason to shy away from physical media as far as video is concerned. But I love my lps and cds too. Guess the guys who can repair legacy gear will still be more valuable at least to me.;)

That is what we have you for ;)

I am discovering very quickly, and at an even accelerated rate due to recent global commerce events that are completely out of my control, that production costs across the board are increasing. Whether sourcing from overseas or domestically, all costs are going up dramatically and across industries. Everything from steel to microchips.

I have a friend who makes bikes. His hard costs are increasing by 40%. Soft costs by another 20-30% due to the location of manufacture likely shifting. These costs will be passed directly on to the customer and have reduced his growth expectations somewhat. For him, it's recoverable, but for many small businesses, it's not.

Mod sez: YOUR TROLL POST HAS BEEN DELETE!

Sorry if I curbed your enthusiasm.

*Are* there any others at the same price point or less that have a multi channel DAC and can take a HDMI input or read multi-channel FLACs?

Oppo is a great product for a small market niche, in times where most people wants those amazon, chrome, apple gadgets no physical source and a soundbar.
So it's simple.... not enough people buy Oppos to sustain R&D and manufacture.

DVD players process a binary code folks. That would be 1's and 0's for those unaware. It doesn't matter if said binary data is interpreted by a $79 DVD player or a $1500 box. The results are the SAME! There's zero difference in the quality of the audio or video from that shiny new Blu-ray which just arrived from Amazon. Sorry....but that's a fact.

Therefore, its of no surprise a company that primarily existed upon selling overpriced DVD players is going bye-bye. People are wising up to this garbage. Well, most at least. Even the snooty snob-like undesirables that you'd rather not share a beer with are seeing the light. Its true, as I know a few like that.

Same thing with DAC's. $100, $500, $5,000, $15,000, even the built-in DAC in your AV receiver....pretty much all the same thing. In fact, the integrated DAC on my Yamaha AV receiver and Yamaha integrated amp sounds better than my standalone DAC that cost $400. That DAC is probably coloring the sound somewhat to give the illusion that it sounds better. That's a common trick, especially among boutique builders of just about anything. They just add their little bit of color to the circuitry and proclaim sonic accuracy which surpasses everything else and charge a massive premium for it.

Sorry if I curbed your enthusiasm.

You reverse your own position in one sentence; "it's all the same, in fact, one is better than the other".

Talk to yourself much ?

There is something funny in the panic where people are now looking for other brands/models and snubbing the thought of buying an oppo just as they were about to pull the trigger, Returning their recently purchased oppo units etc. This isn't the same as the first and rather ridiculous version of DiVX dvd ( remember this crazy rental scheme DVD format ) or HD-DVD, or SAAB yet the sky is falling, "Ohh THE HUMANITY" hahah :)

It seems like a good time to buy an oppo player to me, not return one. Get one while it lasts. - What's the panic about? It might fail in 5 years , 7 years? 10 years?
Oh what do I do , what do I do...? I wouldn't be surprised if the same people looking to return also own NON repairable gear from companies that are currently active. ( Audio Research immediately comes to mind). Panic over Oppo Digitial shutting down disc player production? Disc based players are on the decline and have been for well over a decade, 4K DVD or whatever it's called will not save the industry. It's Niche at best just like all this crazy 11.2 or whatever absurd ( to me) "Home Theater" spec / tech is out now.

Streaming , hate it or love it, is the crack cocaine of media consumption. Yeah yeah I know. Vinyl sounds best blah blah blah. Hand churned butter and home-nade Ice cream is frickin delicious too but hell if I have the time ( or funds) to make it regularly. Oppo has done well by me. Panic? Nope , Celebrate! It is what it is.

So... Raise up your glass .. To OPPO Digital ! Thanks for extending the videophile/audiophile enthusiast Tradition.. God Speed to the team and staff!
This ^^^ took the words out of my mouth.

You keep shouting "No difference" like you actually expect someone to believe you.
We don't. You are wrong. We know better.
Look up DACs Look up Brown and Burr chips, look up -

Oh wait, you keep saying the Bluray has no difference in sound -
but WE have been saying the PLAYERS DO have a difference.

- please find another thread to crap in ...

THAT I can accept - people don't appreciate the value -
people want turnkey solutions and have little or no discernment for extra values.

Or play SACDs, or DVD-As?

Image quality? One can argue all they want that the info coming off a disc is digital and it's all the same, but no way no how can you argue what you see on a screen.
When I bought my 83 when it was just released, it threw an image at my 90"+ projector. Compared to the Walmart special stuff it wasn't all that subtle how much better it looked.

Oppo was at the forefront of upscaling DVDs.
The days of hard media may be fading and that's why they're going away, but that doesn't mean what they did was 'over priced'or 'garbage'. Screw that. They made good products for those that wanted what they were offering.

In the beginning, the market speaks with impulse and irrationality.
But in the end, when the truth is embraced, the market speaks with its wallet.

That's nonsense. My decision years ago to buy some of the first Oppo DVD players was anything but impulsive or irrational. And in the end, many years later , I am still enjoying the many reasons why I purchased their products. As it turns out , it still stands as a very rational decision.

For example , my Oppo DVD player allows me to direct analog out for each channel . On some recordings, the bass output via analog out can be significantly better than the HDMI route. As a matter of fact, I discussed this with one of the musicians who is on a specific DVD when I was fortunate enough to meet him.

Most people think the DAC in a Amazon Echo Dot can't be any good. Do you think they would put a Chit DAC in a product that helps them sell millions of monthly subscriptions to Amazon Music Unlimited. They sound somewhere between good and excellent when you output them to your main system. Pretty much limited by the quality of the MP3 source they are using for the particular song or album.

Maybe this is the hot topic to make this thread explode.:rflmao:.

Sure.

I tell you what.
Grab the keys to the Delorian, go back to 2009, and find me a player that can do DVD(with quality upscaling to 720p, 1080i and 1080p), DVD-A, SACD, and CD, and doesn't break the bank. The Oppo I bought back then, and still use(this morning by the way) was $500.
Unless I missed it, there was no Walmart special offering what I needed. In fact, a Walmart(or Best Buy, or Future Shop, or whatever) cheap Toshiba was my stopgap while the Oppo was on the way, and got punted to secondary status.

People that have not experienced a higher end product and compared it to there low end best buy special that read about 1's and 0's usually say what the above thread crapper says. Those who have experienced the difference between quality and crap and chose the quality know better.
