Painted mc30's

Maybe it has already been covered, but ...

1) Could be those were eaten up with rust??
2) Isn't that reversible, even if it would be difficult?

I don't have a dog in the hunt, and I get the outcry, but perhaps there is a reason. Just playing devil's advocate.

You mean "salt water dipped" looking like the very rusty tops of my 30`s, as seen in my picture, Tim ?

:)

Yes no dog in the hunt here either but apparently they were a bit rusty and I suppose that paint could be sandblasted off. I saw it posted on the Mcintosh fb page and I was amazed by all the "great job" comments. Not so surprisingly that doesn't seem to be the case here at ak

I like it.

If you have a pair of amps with rusty chassis and dented transformer cans, ... what else are you going to do? Not going to hurt anything and it's not a matter of defacing a perfect-condition collectible.
Well, I would have likely done a tad more prep work - say, pull the transformers off, sand and paint them gloss black, remove all components in the chassis, sand and paint them (not revlon orange) vs what was done here.

It may not be what I would do to my own MC30s (if I were fortunate enough to have them), but I admire the chutzpah to do your own thing... Especially if they were in bad shape to begin with, I see no harm in this. It's better that the amps are loved and being used than tossed or parted out...

I absolutely agree
They are his amps and no doubt he spent many hours on them.
The next owner has the decision to make them Original looking or not .

^^^^Now to me that's a beautiful looking pair of MC30's; clinic stickers and all. Hypothetical situation; if those were side by side with the orange peel 30's on an auction site those 30's would be getting my bids as I'd be ashamed to display those red things.

Thank you motorstereo.
Those MC-30`s & the C 8/C8S preamps were a package purchase for I seem to think $ 125.00.
And were my first Mac gear purchase, and also my first separate`s audio component`s type audio gear, as well.

I, at the time didn`t know better, so I installed that Mac system in my parent`s garage where I had set up a electronic work bench to teach myself how to repair audio equipment, and the MC 30`s, being placed on the damp concrete floor, the top`s rusted a bit faster with the box fan ventilated garage.
In the mid eighties, I met my future "Bat Eared" B-I-L, who was a very good part time FOH sound man, and a flute musician,, & fellow audiophile, as a repair customer, and in chatting with him, he became very interested in the Mac C-8/C8s preamps, and wish to purchase them, if I could build a quality power supply for them, as the 30`s with their umbilical cables had powered the preamp`s prior, and I was going to keep, and restore the MC-30`s at a future date..
So, I build a PS for him, and went through, and reworked the preamps to make sure they were operating per spec or better.

He still has them, and in the early 2000`s he set up a cobbled together quad amplified system with all sorts of JBL, ESS, EMIT, etc. raw speaker/tweeter/mid range components, all tweaked it all by ear. and invited his, also a audiophile friend, and myself, over for a listen..

Let me tell you, he had it superbly dialed in, he put in Brother`s in Arm`s DDD CD + other reference CD`s in his analog output connected Mac MCD 7005 player, and that cobbled together speaker/hybrid tube, SS stereo system became instantly transparent, and was one of the best sounding stereo systems that I ever heard, especially if you didn`t look at it !,

At that time I had a biamp`d Mac XRT-22 spkr/ big amp Crown amp powered, and carefully 1/3rd octave voiced & time aligned system in my house next door, and by all who heard it, gave it high praise.. :)

Ironically, at least to me, after hearing his system, some time before hearing his system, he came over one night with some of his go to test CD`s for a check out of my recently tweaked system and put in a Gerry Mulligan CD in my analog connected Mac MCD 7007 player, and commented that one of the better recorded tracks was the best he had ever heard up to that time, and he was being truthful, as he was quick to let you know if he felt anything was off in a/your sound system, if he felt that it wasn`t performing up to what he thought it was capable of, but in a diplomatic way, of course.

But, after hearing my B-I-L`s system, I regretted selling those Mac tube preamps to him !,

Sorry about the long winded post. :blah:

The Sheib car paint job was $99.95, but It was $129.95 to paint a van. When asked about the price differential, between a car, and a van, Scheib replied: "We have to use two paint rollers to paint a van".:yikes:

I bought a TR6 some years ago that the previous owner had painted at Erl Sheib. Overspray everywhere, when I removed the turn and tail lamp lenses I found the reflectors and bulbs painted also, ... I stripped most of the paint by hand with a plastic "razor blade", the original paint below wasn't even scuffed first (and was in excellent condition!). He got his money's worth I guess.

My thoughts are the guy destroyed a pair of iconic Mcintosh pieces.:(

You don't know what they looked before hand and with your eyes closed, you'd never know the difference. Life's not too short for one pair of hot rod red MC30s. They are, after all, but tools to make great sounds, which they do amazingly well.

I'm in the - Not knowing what they looked like before camp and besides, they are his or hers and they most certainly can paint them what ever color they want.

Orange peel and all and no they're not mine.

I wonder if these belong to Bob Carver?? Doesn't he build/sell some crimsom red amps?

Hey, it's his (or her) stuff, they can go where they like. Not how I'd have gone, for the record.

Back in the 80's, I liked to polish the transformers on my amps, blasphemy to museum artifact folks (I worked in a museum for years.)

Cold brew and some chill music on now.

Ever notice how your car seems to drive and handle better after a $200 detailing job? I'm sure the owner thinks the lows go down another 20 Hz and the highs up another 5 K.
