Painted mc30's

@CruzBay My MC40's look about in the same shape as your MC240 does with the chrome pitting and transformers with scuffing on the paint. Heck, they are as old as I am so I don't care, it's all about how they sound.
As far as the painted one? I thought about doing that to my MC40's when I got them but decided to go with the worn and distressed look instead. Mostly because I knew the reactions it would cause and the resale value. But I do have to say that I think it looks pretty nice myself and I'm sure that the chrome underneath is nothing to look at. If mine were rust buckets I'd have likely done the same, there are no reproduction chassis for the MC40's.

My 2nd Mc30 had been painted. Sort of.

Found it at a hi fi store in '71 or '72. It was a little rusty and someone had spilled fluorescent orange paint on it. But it was complete and worked. Paid $25 for it including the C-8 and octal cable. :)

The sales man also told me about the McIntosh clinic that was being held the next week. Dave O'Brien hisself took pity on it and helped scrape orange paint.

My thoughts.
The parts are all available to completely rebuild these to whatever spec a person desires. Most of them are gong to have rusty chassis by now, and dented transformers are par for the course.

People can do what they want with their gear, but i see this as someone taking the shortcut around actually rebuilding the amps and replacing the chassis. Its cheaper easier and faster to quickly krylon over everything.
If the amps were painted to match other components the painter would have done well to remove the transformers and paint them separately.

Sound wise they are likely indistinguishable, but visually, they scream "shortcuts"

There's probably people who think that i totally ruined my pair, by restoring them with all new components, and uding wtinkle finish on the transformers. Those people are just as free to spend their money as i am to spend mine.

I think you did great. I prefer the gloss black personally, but note I said prefer, I plan to restore a pair of mine with new chassis and I haven't decided yet on whether they'll get a newer-technology tube socket (for example) or the original sockets (in good condition).

I do like the red in the OP, if done well I think about how much I'd like to paint the cans on mine midnight-blue metallic with a black-tinted clear-coat, ... but will probably chicken out and stay original look.
