Very cool!, I recently got a pl-7, the operation is indeed cool, as is the table. all things condered, it's far from what it looks (if that makes sense), a great table that most wouldn't consider, due to the early-80's look. Probably had alot of flak for the platic top, which hides a nice heavy metal bottom:yes:. Cool arm too, low tracking weight.
As I recall, the pl-2 is a belt drive?, while the rest in the line are direct drive

I'm a PL-4 owner! I got it out of hibernation, but everybody's out of shure Mx97e carts, so I'm getting impatient.Check other posts for more info.

Yup,belt drive, that's what was wrong, plus the spindle needed a clean and lube. New cart, AT3600!

The PL-7 is a great TT, no belts to contend with. I had a speed problem with the PL-2 , dirty speed switch, all fixed again. Speeds right on now.

Ah, i'm glad i didn't have to do that with mine, though I think it's a common issue, and probably will have to some day.
Since you have been inside the TT, I was wondering if the table is mechanically controlled, or servo based, or if you can even tell... The fact mine still works (still surprises me to have a fully functioning TT
) makes me think servo (also the way it acts), but it could be mechanical as well:scratch2:

Do these tables have a provision for motor lube? Is it a periodic maintenance issue?

I put a couple of drops of oil at the top capstan shaft base, and let it gravity feed. Not able to get to the bottom part though.
Mechanical inside.
Speed adjusting is better from the bottom while you watch the strobe.

Reviving an older thread, as it's related. I'm reasonably well experienced working on a variety of turntables, but the PL-2 has me flummoxed, at least for now.
I can't get the speed set correctly on either 33 or 45. On 33, it's too fast when the VR is turned all the way down. On 45, it's too slow with the VR turned all the way up. In both cases, it seems to run steady, per the strobe disk.
I checked the 220 uf capacitor, and it's fine (if that has anything to do with it). I'll also note that sometimes when the motor is stopped, it randomly won't start the platter, so it has to be nudged to spin up. Finally, measuring the voltage on the black and red wires (the ones that go to the small VR board attached to the motor), I'm getting about 10.5 volts. As I can't find a schematic for either this model or the PL-120, I don't know what voltage is supposed to be.
Do these motors simply get weak sometimes? Maybe the tranformer voltage is off. Any help would be appreciated.

I've got service manuals for the series at home. I'll check and get back to you. I've worked on a number of PL-2's and not encountered this problem although I did have one that didn't want to hold speed (even with new belt). I did the same thing that I do on the DD's in the series - hit the speed switch with de-oxit. Seemed to clear it up just fine. May wish to give that a shot.

Actually, I DID inject contact cleaner into the speed switch - in fact, to ensure the chemical hit the target, I CAREFULLY drilled a tiny hole in the end of the switch, so I know it went where I wanted. Alas, no change. Anyway, thanks in advance for any info you can provide.
