I get attached to stuff, and like to collect things.
You know I am not so sure about those Kappa 9's. I find that when you sit down they are to high. Since they have two bass speakers stacked on top of each other and then the Polygraph it puts all the bass speakers at about ear level and all the high speakers much to high for best listen postions. It sounds like your sitting "Inside" of a subwoofer. If I turn the bass down then you lose to much of the bass. They sound great if you stand up and get back about 20 feet. It also doesn't help that they tilt them back at an angle to make the phasing more linear that only makes the highs directed at an even higher point. Has anyone else noticed this problem? My pair of Kappa 8's sound great but if you sit down your ears are right inline with the EMIT's and the bass driver is right near the floor.
My pair of QLS-2's driven by a single SAE 2400L sound much better than those Kappa 9's which I have biamped with a pair of Crown 200 wpc amps. In a standing postion the Kappa's sound good. Maybe I need a larger room and place the seating back 30 feet!

Isn't a shame that we don't all have at least 10,000 square feet for keeping our stuff. But it looks like you are out growing your area. You got amps and stuff all over that entertainment center of yours. I don't think they intended for that much audio gear in them when they made them.
Well I powered up the QLS-1's, to see what I had. Good news is all the front EMIT's working fine. The crossovers and pots all working fine. Cabinets cleaned up ok. One of the Watkins DVC bass speaker is ok just needs foam. The other I don't think is any good. The spare set that I have is of the paper type not the poly type. The poly type seems to have a larger magnet than the older set I have or I have a set from a QLS-2 or below. I have repaired four of the mid range drivers and installed them in the left speaker and other than re-installing the orginal Watkins driver, and making a new foam cover for the rear firing EMIT everything seems good.
The other one, all of the EMIT's are fine, except the rear firing one. I will have to try and fix that or fine a replacement. I have 5 more mids to repair and replace and replace the WAtkin bass driver. I know he still sells them but I don't know if sells them individually. Maybe he can fix mine as I want to have both of them with the poly cone. The one has severe case of coil rub.

Lacks a little bass but I think it needs more power. I have it bi-amps on the crowns, and they are smaller crowns. I am getting a pair of amps that are 400 wpc and I think that will wake them up. I would have gotten them today but I didn't want to bother my friend on Labor day. I can always turn the attenuators down on the back so I don't have to worry about accidently turning up the volume and blowing them out.

Those should be the test to see just how good the QLS-1's are because I already know how good my RS-1b's sound and they are not even placed in any kind of postion to sound good.

Those look great Ken! From your previous description I thought they would be rough but it looks like you'll have a nice set for your efforts. IIRC you can have your watkins reconed by the man himself and you'll be all set! Someone posted a while back that the pots only operate in a range of +or- 6db so go easy til you get more power. Nice to see someone else repairing speakers in their dining room.

Well they had more issues than I was lead to beleive. What kind of people would buy some the the finest speakers and then not take care of them I could see if someone went down to walmat and bought some cheap speakers and not cherishing them but these were a major investment when they paid for them and I would have thought that they would have really taken great care.
Wait till I get some pics of the RS-1's they are so clean you would think they are only a few years old.

I know what you mean, mine had major issues and most folks would probably have parted them out or trashed them if they had no idea of their potential.

Here are my latest pair of Infinity's. These are a pair of RS-1's. They are in what I consider excellent shape for their age, no scratches on the cabinets anywhere and all the drivers in perfect condition. All grills present with emblems intact. I have hooked them up and everything works as designed. Am very pleased with this craigslist find.
As to their sound I find it great considering the fact I just have them sitting there, with no optimal placement. As these are not where I plan for them to be anyway, these will go in my home in Georgia, along with the other pair. But what I have done as far as sound. The bass towers need more power than the mid-hi towers. I am still waiting on a some amps but even driving them with 120 wpc they sound very impressive, at less then 1/2 volume they really put out some very loud clean music. What I have done as both my amps are equal in power is I turn the gain down on the mid-high towers so they are about half of that of the bass. Now the bass is very balanced with the mids and highs and I run my active crossover (infinity) on mostly the flat levels and the bass attenuator on about 1 oclock.
I really don't find them starving for power at all as I tend to listen to my music at rather loud volumes and I hardly ever go past about 1/3 volume on my preamp. Now the room is rather small but I find these to be less power hungry than the QLS-1's, even so I am going to change out these amps hopefully in a day or two with a pair of 400 wpc crowns to see how much the increased power inproves the quality of sound.

I finally got these little guys going ..had to pare down a 4" foam surround to work with a 3.5" driver..one is as ugly as a mud fence, the other, not so bad..bit sound remarkable..these speakers have a very tight, smooth sound..tasteful across the spectrum. A one word description of how they sound is...keepers. When played in tandem with the RS4b's, they pick up what they drop, and vice versa...what a formidable combination they are...
This Infinity madness, which I became infected with here on AK a couple of months ago, is one aggressive syndrome. Not 6 weeks ago, I set out to obtain a pair of RS4b's..amazingly enough, I did so, quite economically, too...it became apparent that I needed more power, and the Kenwood M2 fell into my hands, also at a remarkably modest price. So now, with the 4000's, 4b''s and excellent M2 power, I have achieved a modicum of audio satisfaction, and I should be content to be listening to such superb, desirable gear...It hasn't, been but a span of ten days in which all these elements were obtained, and made right...why, pray tell, am I now scheming to obtain a pair of Kappa 9's from a guy who has 3 pair, and is waving them under my nose? I can't help but wonder just how far this is gonna go...sure am glad its a fun ride! I'd like to thank you all here on the Infinity forum for your codependence, and I only hope that I have the opportunity to do the same for each of you...

I use a Marantz 5400 OSE as receiver(looking for a upgrade atm, Marantz 8004, Denon 4310 or Nad T758). My sources are a Marantz DV 9500 dvd-player and a Rega 3 record player with an Ortofon Super OM20 cartridge.

very nice indeed!!:thmbsp: Infinitys are a pleasure to refoam, it's so relatively easy....I simply must hear a pair of the 5000's, a step up from my newly reborn 4000's which are superb..best low freq reproduction of any of my Infinitys so far..

my kappa 6.1's
this is my first "real" speakers and "real" 2-ch audio system. the kappa's are running off of an adcom gfa 545II that i had restored/upgraded at bigsky audio in mt.
they sound great with the 545II but i just sent out a 555II to bigsky for the same treatment to run these soon.

Just bought my first set of Infinities. My friend picked them up and is storing them for me. Haven't even seen them yet. Surrounds need to be replaced but hopefully will be worth it
BTW I picked them up for $60 plus some gas/beer money for the friend. Now all I need to do is find an amp to run them

hartattack, the RSII's are one of fellow AKer Arkay's top favorite speakers. he's one of the most long-winded and (thankfully!) enjoyable posters on the site :thmbsp: you should see if you can find a thread or two about his RSII experiences. he's got a lot of other great gear and knows what he's talking about. i'm sure there are more than a few other RSII owners on here, but i can't think of any off the top of my head. enjoy them!

Hartattack, congrats on your RS-II acquisition. With a bit of TLC these speakers will rival most costing 10 times as much. Especially for what you paid!
FYI, when you pull the woofers, check out the amount of pollyfill used in each chamber. My right speaker had 4 times the amount of pollyfill in both the upper and lower chambers than the left speaker!
Another tip: When you replace the pollyfill, ball up small amounts, about the size of a baseball, and replace loosely. I found that about 45-50 balls in each chamber sounded the best.
I also found that one of my woofers was wired out of phase. This could have been due to the previous owner, who re-foamed the speakers himself replacing it incorrectly, but others on this forum have indicated that they had drivers out of phase as well.
