Please Post your Infinity speakers

ken,

the small holes were put in the domes on purpose. and it shouldn't be a problem if the domes no longer look sticky or shiny as long as the shape is still good. if the domes are pushed in, you can unscrew the faceplates to access the back of the dome and push it back up - it might be too late to fully retain the original shape, though. there are probably other pros that can do it, but i know for certain the Carcel at "Around the Sound" in Seattle does a thorough and careful job. he's now successfully repaired two or three dozen of them over the years, if i remember my first conversation with him correctly.

how many RS1 XO boxes do you have now?!

Thanks for the info. I already removed one and pushed the domes back in shape no problem but they seem so soft and my other mids don't have any holes. I don't understand how such a soft material can produce good audio as it doesn't seem rigid enough to not warp when playing.

I have three crossovers now. This last pair the guy had it set up where each bass tower had its own crossover unit, seems like over kill to me. I have seen many people who have their RS-1b's set up with an extra set of base towers. I really don't understand why if you figure out the square area of each base tower is likes like having three pairs of 16 inch base speakers. On my set up using the rane crossover I have to run the base towers quite low and even have set the attenuator on my base amp down in order to keep the base from being to pronounced.

I am going to pick up a pair of amps from a friend who doesn't need them anymore a pair of 400 watt rms amps for them

not sure why some have the holes and some don't, but it doesn't seem to affect performance. the reason they work well as midrange drivers even though they are so soft, i think, is because the voice coil pushes them in just the right spot to use the innate strength of the dome shape, and because they don't have to have much excursion. i think they're pretty much worthless below 600 Hz unless you have a big line array of the like on the QLS1.

started working on some of the mids this one I just took apart has a metal plate with perferations in the middle after you pull off the cone the other one I pulled apart didn't have that metal plate just a piece of foam. Maybe someones already been in some of them. I don't think it will make a difference willl it to not have that plate unless its to keep the foam from coming loose and interacting with vibration against the cone.

I also linked on to the top banner of a site named simply speakers and they have a drop in mid for the quantom line speaker 2 inch dome and they want 89 dollars. It looks junkier than the ones I found on from a different source that only wants 29 dollars for a drop in 2 inch soft dome mid. They both are round instead of the square plate that is used by infinity. I think the OEM one is the same as used on some ADS model speakers, but they are discontinued from ADS as well.

I am going to buy one of those 29 dollar ones and see if I can take out the voice coil and dome and fit it into the square infinity plate.

One of my RS2.5 speakers being powered (very successfully!) by some Cary 572SE monoblocks. Sounds wonderful on about 10wpc!

Anyone know where I can buy a spare set of Svetlana 572-3 tubes for the Cary's?

I bet that setup sounds sweet! hey old is good, when it applies to the right things, like speakers...be very careful with the sirens call of Infinity speakers...I got my first set of Infinitys, a pair of RS 325's not 3 months ago...(amazing little speakers, I regret selling them, but thats another story)....look at how far my case of Infinity-itis has progressed in under 90 days!..at this rate...

Heres my latest addition, a pair of Kappa 9's everything i perfect condition including 4 brand new woofers, the last that Infinity had in stock!

Awwwwwww. The alpha dog of the series!!! :tresbon:
There was (maybe still is) in the neighborhood thrift shop but i couldn't afford it so i just gazed at the pair eating my heart out.

My list of Infinity's has grown a little since this thread started:

RS-4's, RS-5B's, RS-9B's, RS-2001's & RS-3000's

Finally got my franken-QLS1's presentable, new walnut bases, new peerless mid-bass couplers to replace the tiawanese squawkers I found them with, and philips mid-domes that came with them. Recapped thanks to cdfac's beautiful how-to thread and encouragement! Sounding very fine in my current audio/HT system with AB 9220 bass amp, Yamaha P2200 mid-high amp, Rane EQ, Yamaha RXV-1300 HT preamp. Pic 2 is blurry with Poopster between the 2 MK V75 subs for scale! Grilles need a rework but I never use them anyway.

very cool looking project!..the little philips dome drivers are quite presentable...that is what my beloved DCM Time Windows sport...very sweet looking setup all around...bet it sounds remarkable!:thmbsp:

Yeah those look real presentable indeed! I need to take some pic's of my new pair of QLS-1's before I redo them. I have started already replacing the tinsel wires on the mids, have yet to test the high EMIT's, but they look ok. Cabinets in good shape along with the grills ok. Don't know about the crossovers yet as I have not even put a signal to them.

My stall of Infinity's
QLS-1
QLS-2
RS-1b
RS-1
Kappa 9
Kappa 8

Everything in great shape except the QLS-1's and missing a grill for the Kappa 8's.

Anyone got a pair of QLS reference models they want to sell cheap I have never seen a pair for sale yet. I would like a pair of the RS 2.5, and RS 4.5's, those will be my next ones to watch for. And of course the Beta's, and Gamma's.
