Born in Savannah and moved to Miami when I was 2. Career started in Miami and transfers took me to: Orlando (where I met and married my wonderful wife), Atlantic City, back to Miami, back to Orlando, San Jose, Ca, Columbia, SC, Ft. Lauderdale and now Atlanta. Where, thankfully, my career ended.

Eight moves in 20 years and spent 6 of them in San Jose. Been here 15 years and it is now home.

Born and raised in Southern NJ...it's a whole different state from Northern NJ. The taxes suck...worse that most other places that people complain about taxes. The insurance rates are too high...much worse than pretty much every place else execpt for metropolitan NY, Chicago and Atlanta. The cost of living is high...second only to southern Califonia. NJ has some of the "most dangerous cities in America". Hell, number one, three, four and eight are in NJ. The weather is hot or cold, no happy medium. The humidity is oppressive. There are too many people. There isn't a "funny smell" though. That is just a blind stereotype. Yet strangely enough, I have no desire to leave. I've tried other places through out the country and I can't take it. I never knew what a "New York Minute" was until I spent time somewhere else. Then I realize that I didn't know what it was because I have been living it all my life. Things tend to move fast here in the mid-atlantic states. Alot of stuff happens here. I can go other places and relax but I soon tire of the slow-pace and the time it takes to get things done. I need the harshness, abuse and speed of life here. I get bored otherwise.

Jstas, you've pretty much nailed the NJ/SE PA state of mind. Spent about 90% of my 70+ years in either the Philly area or the Garden (?) State. Been in Metro Atlanta for the past 6 years. Nice area, nice people--only one place I'd rather be--NJ/SE PA. Haven't quite figured out why, but I guess that's part of the attraction.

Yeah, other places are nice and I've been to some gorgeous places on this earth. No matter where I go though, it doesn't feel right. It's hard to explain but unless you lived in the area for a long time or grew up here, it's hard to understand. My home town is Camden, NJ. Now named the most dangerous city in the country and I regularly venture into the bowels of the city with my ambulance. It's an experience to say the least. I went to college in center city Philadelphia which was also an experience. If you want your children to see life in all it's glory and all of it's disgusting wretchedness, send them to school at a university in a large, American city. It will give anyone a firm appreciation for how lucky they really are. Hell, anyone should spend some time in a major city and see for yourself. I was lucky, I went to school in one major city and I actually worked for a short time in Manhattan. Add to that running on an ambulance squad and you see life, bare-naked and up close. You see all its vulnerabilities and all of its triumphs. You can't help but learn something about yourself from those experiences.

I have been to every state on the Eastern seaboard except New Hampshire and every state on the Western Seaboard plus Hawaii, Texas, Michigan, Ohio and Indiana. No matter where I go I find myself comparing it to where I am right now. I suppose it is because I found life here and this is where I came to look life right in the face and realized that if I can hack it here, no place on this earth will kick my ass. I guess in some twisted way, that makes it home to me. Maybe that makes me the best of the worst or the worst of the best or whatever. All I know is that it isn't easy living here. Not that it is easy living anywhere but it seems that there is more working against you here than other places. Some will say otherwise and that it's exaggerations and such but again, if you aren't living here, you aren't seeing what I am talking about and there aren't words to describe it.

People think I am nuts for liking it here. What do I care, they just don't understand because they base blind opinion on undeserved stereotypes and misconceptions. I guess that's good though. It keeps most of the people who can't hack it away from my lovely state. Like my favorite shirt says "Welcome to New Jersey, now go home!" I have met many people from the area who have moved away and probably about 85% of those I met have told me that they wish they hadn't left because they miss it. I guess that makes them nuts too.

I like where I live and I'm going to stay here as long as I can. I suppose that's good for the rest of you who don't live here. Then you only have to put up with me on an Internet forum!

OK, I'm gonna turn sappy mode off now.

Dufur Oregon, that little spot on the map that looks like fly **** just 13 miles south of The Dalles Oregon :)

Ya know, after all this time, I can't believe there isnt ONE member from the Middle East...ESPECIALLY Israel. I would think that Israel, with its massive immigrant population, or other countries with close ties to the West (Morocco, Egypt, Saudi Arabia...) would have some audiophiles on board.

Nope, England is not in Europe. Two very different places both figurativly and literally. This is one "Yank" that agrees with you there!

BUMP!

I think there have been enough new members to justify a BUMP to this post! let's keep it goin'...

Born and raised in north-eastern Arkansas. Lived in Seattle in '74 and then in Little Rock for a few years in the 80's. Moved back because the economy is better here, little to no unemployment and housing, utilities and taxes are cheap. Besides, I'm only an hour away from Memphis if I want to have some fun on Beale Street!

Born in Port Colbourn Ontario. Then back and forth from Toronto to various little towns always less then 20 miles from Toronto with my parents. Now, I have been dragging my parents along with me from Toronto out to where I currently reside in Bradford Ont. About 20 miles north up the 400 Hwy. I haven't seen any fog round here for a while.

Let's see if I can get this listed right...

  • Was born in Poughkeepsie, NY in '62
  • Moved to McDill AFB in Tampa, FL...dad was with small Army detachment
  • Lived with mom's folks in Linden, NJ while dad fought in Vietnam
  • After the war we moved to a li'l country town called Pulvers Corner, NY
  • Then to Pleasant Valley, NY when dad transfered for new job
  • Another job transfer to East Hartford, CT...lived there 8 years
  • My senior year ('80) another promotion and transfer to Jacksonville, FL
  • After graduation, I joined the Army and am off to Ft. Dix, NJ for Basic Training
  • After boot camp I'm transfered to Lowry AFB in Denver, CO for Advanced Individual Training
  • My first duty assignment is at Ft. Hood, TX...home of the 1st Cavalry Division
  • My last tour of duty is at Krabbenloch Kasern in Ludwigsburg, Germany with the 51st Signal Battalion
  • After my Honorable Discharge, I'm back home to where my folks moved in '82, here in Lakeland, FL

And I've lived here for almost 20 years now (parents moved again to Vernon-Rockville, CT in '99)...whew!

Born in Jackson Heights, Queens (NY), Stayed long enough to see the World's Fair and the blackout of 1966 and moved to the armpit of the world Waldwick, NJ. Moved to Detroit, stayed there long enough to see a tornado. Moved to French Gulch, CA but couldn't hack smoking those tasty purple buds three times a say whilst handling dynamite. Tried sunny Braedenton, FL, but it was way too hot for me in the summer. Chicago was nice until I got a taste of that wind that blows across the lake in winter, so fk that! Moved back to Waldwick, NJ, bought a '66 Caddy hearse with an S&S body and met a girl from Brooklyn. Moved to Brooklyn, NY couldn't find parking for a hearse the size of a stretch limo so I sold it, the girl was a pain in the ass, so I left her, and I've been in Brooklyn since, except for summers at the house on a little island off the coast of Maine that's been in my family since 1918. I imported a wife from Edmonton, AB 3 years agoand we both intend to stay here for a long time.
Jstas, you must know these two songs:
"When I die,
Bury me low,
Where I can hear the petroleum flow,
A sweeter sound,
I never will know,
The rolling mills of New Joisey!

Down in Red Bank,
There is a bar,
Where the drunks come from near and from far,
They come by truck,
They come by car,
The drunken bums of New Joisey"

and

Oh the factory smoke, will make you choke
Deep in the Heart of Jersey
The City rats run in big packs
Deep in the Heart of Jersey
The Pizza man says, "I no understand"
Deep in the Heart of Jersey
And route 17, the traffic there is mean
Deep in the Heart of Jersey

Oh the city skies ain't fit for flies
Deep in the Heart of Jersey
The Parkway man takes a quarter from your hand
Deep in the Heart of Jersey
The dumps in June ain't like perfume
Deep in the Heart of Jersey
But it's my state and I think it's great
Deep in the Heart of Jersey
Way out west in wild new jersey
Yippi Yi Yay! :D

Funny, thought I had posted in here. Born in St.Lambert, Quebec Dec 8 1930, moved to Otterburn Park at age 3, this was a small town on the Richelieu River that my uncle and another man started around the time I was born. Moved to Ottawa, Ontario in 1970 because that was where my job went. Moved here to Maryland in 1984, first in Columbia and here to the homestead in 1988, likely to stay here for the balance.
