Someone posted a set of QLS-1's on Craigslist.

Edit: Well, the sour grapes CL post is gone, so I'll replace the link with the seller's photo of the QLS-1's.

I'll take some more revealing pictures this weekend.

So, I ended up buying these. I paid quite a bit less than the original asking price. I called the seller last night and made an appointment to view them. However, I wasn't the first to look at them. At least one other person looked at them and passed this morning (maybe Tom In RI?)

I was curious about the scam follow up post as well (the speakers were already home with me), but I guess it was just sour grapes. The seller was a nice guy. He may have misrepresented the condition of the speakers initially, but I don't think it was intentional. After the first person passed, he called me back with all the issues that had been pointed out. I made him an offer then and picked them up.

That being said, they are in pretty rough shape, so I'm not sure how salvageable they are. The woofer surrounds are gone and one of the woofer cones is badly damaged. The other cone is far from perfect. The mids have broken connections, and who knows about the EMITs. At a bare minimum, the speakers will have to be completely gone through. The cabinets are in decent shape; although, the bases are pretty beat up from being moved. So, now they are sitting in my basement next to a set of VMPS Tower /R's which are also waiting for a restoration.

I'll try to post some pictures this weekend.

The woofers can be reconed and new surrounds for about $80 each by Millersound. They can do paper or plastic...cheaper than anyone I know of. No afiliation. Good luck and nice grab.

Good $point$.Jim.
Perhaps get both woofers done equally

The big bucks are with those mids and Emits. what about the rear firing one's? Those are real pricey.

But as long as you make this a back burner type project,it might pay off. Very doubtful if you want them up and running within a month. but time to perhaps fall into bargains may work to your advantage.

Dr Marks rebuilds those mids. And he is the guy for the Emits as well. At least you know after you get things from him they've been gone through and you should be set for a decade or 2.

The trouble getting used stuff of course, is that it isn't rebuilt or re-conditioned, it's just used. Used parts---and we're talking 16 different items per speaker--means failures after purchase. They just won't last or hold up and all you did was delay things to save a few bucks.

Then you get into the quandry of driving them properly to extract the best sound. And a large dedicated room, like all the big infinity's. But there definately is light at the end of the tunnel & an interesting journey. You are not restoring say a 1978 AMC Matador & at least your restoration efforts will be rewarded. Good luck and keep us posted.

Awesome find! And worth the effort. Plus, I 2nd the motion, to use Bill LeGall, at Millersound.
Bill is top notch. Do both woofers too, so they'll physically and electrically match.

Also, can you post pictures of the VMPS and QLS-1's? Two of my favorite brands! :thmbsp:

Good Luck!

the mids are the expensive part...most of the EMIT problems (other than a broken trace) are fixed when you reflow the 2 solder points...Its time consuming, and they are a struggle sometimes to get back together...

the mids on the other hand, save up...45.00 + shipping for each to get them fixed...

is it worth it....?

very...

Hi,
So here are a few more pictures. I apologize for the poor quality, but there isn't a lot of space in the room where they are currently stored to take pics.

Here are a couple of pictures of the QLS next to the VMPS Supertower /R's that are also waiting to be restored. These were taken after I pulled the woofers from the QLS's.

So, I pulled the woofers planning to send them to Millersound to see if they can be reconed. However, these popped up on Ebay last night, and I decided to pull the trigger:

They look to be in very nice shape with new surrounds. I'll likely still send the originals out to be repaired at some point (or sooner if these Ebay woofers have any issues).

BTW. The seller looks to be parting out a set of RS 4.5's. He sold the drivers from one 4.5 yesterday (at very good prices), and then listed the second set of drivers today for 2X the price. This includes the EMITs, EMIMs, and woofers in case anyone is looking.

Smooth move picking up those Watkins, E-spirit.
All those soft domes can be pushed back out by removing the flanges, unless you expect another out of control child to to keep them depressed:)
