My grandparents were farmers on 160 acres north and a little west of Oklahoma City. Grandad used to listen to farm reports and baseball games on a battery operated table radio before they had electricity. He had a set wires running outside the window to the battery in grandma's Chevy for the filaments of the tubes and was conscious of how long he had been listening to insure the engine would crank. The Chevy was parked on a slope just in case the battery would not start the engine. By the time I came along they had been 'electrified' and the radio sat unused in the same spot with an old 'B' battery and three D batteries designated 'C' still in place. At the insistence of my father and uncle pressurized well water and indoor plumping arrived in 1961, before that it was five gallon ceramic jars lugged to the porch from the windmill driven pump at the stock tank. That was life on the farm for them during those earlier years.
