Record Bin From single 4 x 8 Sheet of Plywood - Plans

My 3 shelf - 3 wide bin

Hello all, new member/lurker here, getting back into vinyl and found your site by this listing for the record bin, so I figured why not build it and make it my first post.
I was impressed with this design of cabinet and have adapted it for my use, I have a space I plan to put it at and wanted to use all available space to be able to fit as many albums as possible as the collection grows - again, I went three albums wide and three high. I am going to add drawers under the top two shelves and LED lighting but for now this is how it came out.
Just finished build and sanding down - after the first coat of stain I still have to add the (1/4" or 3/8" rod dividers or solid board, have not decided which yet ) inside but this is where I'm at now.

PS I was not worried about the grain on the front running different from the back, once filled it won't be noticed and as tall as it is it needed to appear shorter lol

and I forgot to mention, my bin is 60" tall 40"wide and 20" deep outside dimensions and the fronts are 9" except for the top which is 4" - if anyone wants to autocad that as a drawing?

This is one of the main reasons I have not built one of these yet. WAF.
I would also need to enclose it. Also it would be a good idea to keep dust out.

Maybe even build in a record cleaning machine.

Although I really like the one sheet record bin concept, I was wondering of a way to increase the WAF quotient even more. Maybe some modifications, including tambour doors, perhaps one big one for the top, and two for the bottom.

Perhaps it is too ambitious for a noob, but I'll do some footwork and see if it could work.

Here's mine so far... In order to get WAF I had to build a lid for it as part of the deal. I tried some friction lid supports from lowe's last night and they didn't work at all. I'll try some of the spring-loaded ones next.

Just need to finish up the molding, sand, stain and lacquer...

LOL my WAF was kind of low - BUT oh well she'll get over it. I just told her would you rather I put the albums in milk crates here in the family room stacked up? Then she really warmed up to the bin idea

Did anybody ever post cut sheets / plans for the 3-shelf design?

Ive gotta build some of these, but I feel like Im an "in-betweener."

I have ~450 albums, but would like to continue buying (of course :yes

So Im not sure I can justify the space taken by two two-shelf units, but don't want to get held-up by only having room for ~530 albums that one two-shelf unit would provide.

never saw any cut sheets for the three shelf, wish I had - I just kind of winged it with a freehand drawing.

I made up a sheet but seemed to have lost it. If I can find it I will scan it and post mine - or time allowing measure my bin and write up another. For the sake of easy mine was cut from two sheets, and most cuts were done by home depot for me, ( if you have them cut make sure they allow for the kerf ( Kerf- the piece removed from the blade thickness - had to teach the employee this and we both checked the cut marks prior to cutting. He wanted me to after cutting the first back piece wrong by not allowing for the blade and scrapped a $50 sheet of oak - was hoping to find this piece in the clearance rack but somebody grabbed it up before I could get back ).

update - got the main cabinet built 3 coats of stain to match our other furniture, two coats of polyurethane and in the house, at least it is out of my shop now and ready to start putting records in. :yippy:

I plan to add a drawer under the middle shelf, top shelf, and LED lighting under the shelves.

For now it is usable, at the moment it is has 3" castors but I am probably going to remove them once it is in place.

The dividers are just set in right now ( which is why they look way off for fitting record ) I am going to mount them once I am ready to start filling it up .

Have not found my cut sheet yet, think it went into the land of the lost

Looks better in photo that in person, but that might just be my own opinion. The Significant Other thinks it looks wonderful.

This was a struggle and took a lot longer than it seems to have for others, due to lack of suitable tools (particularly a table saw) and the poor quality of the cutting done at the Big Box. But it works and I'm filling it up as I'm cataloging the collection.

Already I suspect that I underestimated how much storage I need and will have to embark on a second one just to acomodate what I have now, let alone allow for any growth (and I can't resist buying music at garage sales!)

This has been an interesting project. Hope the picture uploads correctly.

Got it in place today and started loading it up. I found out each of the nine rows will fit 110 sleeved records with room to be flippable to find what I want ( mix of singles and doubles, didn't bother to separate ) so I now have storage for around 1000 records.

Just grabbed a quick pic to show it off

post #201 - my bin is 60" tall 40"wide and 20" deep outside dimensions and the fronts are 9" except for the top which is 4" - if anyone wants to autocad that as a drawing?

Basically the shelves are 38.5 X 18.5 and everything else sandwiches them in, the bottom shelf is recessed about 1 1/8" ( was still deciding what to do on the bottom, leave recessed wheels or not - decided against as you all see ) the shelves have 24" spacing, plenty of viewing space. I plan to put two 2" full length drawers with full extension slides under each shelf for "accessories" but due to the projects at hand now they are going to have to wait

I am going to add adjustable brightness LED lighting under each shelf as well

BTW - I owe OldSch00l credit for enlightening me about the Kreg pocket hole jig every joint in this was made with the Kreg jig and Kreg screws.
What a GREAT invention this jig is - wish we had one of them way back when I was installing custom cabinetry. Buying this did add to the cost LOL but as I see great tools as an investment not really an expense I am kind of a Kreg tool addict now and have the Kreg K4MS Jig Master System and a few other of their items and I must say they make some GREAT TOOLS and even their screws work awesome ( get them on Amazon for a LOT less money if you buy them by the 1000 pack) can you ever have enough screws?

Wow, I've been away for a while and this thread has really taken off. I love the lid and 3 wide versions. What started out as a challenge to use one sheet of ply has morphed into a great record bin thread. One of these days I'm going to have to take some time and add links to all the new versions in the first post. If anyone who has made something different would like to post cut sheets and plans post them in here and I'll link to them in the first post. Rock on.

I am building a "one sheet 4x8" LP bin. I have no table saw, so had to rely on the big box store to make most of my cuts.

I have several problems to overcome. The Lowe's panel saw chewed up the board on every cut made against the grain. The dimensions of the cuts were not exactly "spot-on" accurate either.

I will have to paint mine, to be able to cover up the problems. If I were to do it again, I think 3/4" MDF would be plenty heavy duty enough, and would be easier to get cut accurately, at a big box store.

But I appreciate the plans being posted here, and I think mine will be fine in the end, once I fix the various problems.

Will post a photo when complete...

If you have a circular saw, I recommend one of these for straight accurate cuts. It is well worth the money.
