Replacing Klipsch Midrange Diaphragms wi

Ordered Crites x-overs with modified circuit for K53Ti, should havem in a couple days. Ill chime in here and keep everyone posted. I plan to make my own modifications on top of them at some point, Bobs' will serve as good base for that :)

Crites X-over with Squawker Band Pass add-on to accomodate K-53 Ti Mid :) Should have them installed sometime tonite after work :)

Installed them Saturday night, didn't get to some serious listening till yesterday, and today.

Music is definitely smoother, airy, extended highs, tighter bass. Although I can't really attest the difference the band pass upgrade did, everything is definitely very smooth and seamless from top to bottom with better imaging. I might consider better coils at some point, but I'm enjoying this far, excellent upgrade. It's a no-brainer if listening to music is part of your unwinding routine. Thanks again for the work Bob ! :)

Mr Crites, Not sure if this is the format to discuss something about K-57-k replacement diaphrams or not, but the ones offered for $70/pair do not say whether or not they are titanium?
I have a pair of Chorus I's that the previous owner did some work on. They have Crites ti diaphrams for the K-79-K tweeters installed, along with an at home re-capped set of crossovers, also Crites supplied. They sound good with my 2252B Marantz receiver, but until I get time to inspect the work, I won't be comfortable.
I was going to order the mid diaphrams, but don't see that they are Ti. From what I read from your design discussions here, I am left thinking there might be another "new crossover" available for those with Ti tweets AND mids?
Thanks, and I apologize if this might be better discussed in an email.

The only titanium midrange diaphragms available now are the ones the Klipsch uses on the new Heresy III and Cornwall III. In those speakers, Klipsch has compensated for the extended range of the titanium midrange diaphragms by designing in a bandpass on the midrange to keep it from interfering with the tweeter. Some have managed to get Klipsch to sell them the titanium midrange diaphragms to use in speakers which originally had phenolic midrange diaphragms. I started this thread to let those people know that using the titanium midrange diaphragms in place of phenolic might be problematic unless there is also a corresponding crossover change. You could end up with a 3 to 6 db peak in the 6 to 7khz range unless you compensate for it.

OK thank you very much for clearing that up. That being said, I believe I will order the $70 replacement mid diaphrams, and not be concerned with any compatability issues with my current crossovers.

Cool, you will find bob's improved phenolic midrange diaphragms are a step above the stock phenolic, they are definitely smoother than the stock, however they definitely require some burn in time :)

I spoke with Bob C today on the phone. I ordered up some tweeter diaphrams and cap kit for a set of Quartets. I also plan to do some internal bracing with some scrap I have around. We had a discussion on new mid diaphrams including the Klipsch titaniums, stock and his replacements. Bob had only good to say about the new Klipsch version and voiced his crossover concerns that are backed up by his test traces. I am very tempted to pull the trigger but will wait to see how the planed revisions sound.

I currently have a set of upgraded Chorus IIs and the Quartets. Due to a perceived better mid I am considering making the Q's my mains!

By the way, 1st post!

Last year I installed BC's Ti tweeter diaphragms in my Forte IIs. Today I finally received a pair of Klipsch K-53 Ti midrange diaphragms and have installed them.

I know people say I need to modify my crossover to make them perform at their best (I'm using crossovers made for me by Chris Munson several years ago), but my first listening confirms a significant improvement in sound just as-is. Clearer midrange, and yes clearer bass as well. Debbie Harry has never sounded so Debbie-like!

I understand they'll take a while to give their best but the initial sound is a step up and I'm enjoying them.

has Klipsch allowed the straight sale of the Titanium mids or do you still have to use the ruse that your Heresy III/Cornwall IIIs have blown their diaphragms???

Bill

I think it depends upon who you talk with in parts, I haven't heard of anyone recently getting them but I have been asked how to get them. I do know they really don't want to sell them to DIYers. So its key not to mention that. Or just play the game of I have blown diaphragms. It would be good to know what people are going through to get them. IMO I wouldn't want to ever be without them they were great right out of the box for me. No real significant break-in time required for me. As nice as Bob's mids are the Titanium eclipsed them from the get go. I also needed about 40hrs for Bob's to sound up to par for me, they were well worth the wait IMO.

If I have to in the future I will buy used Klipsch with Titanium's and put in replacements that allow the speaker to work and sell the klipsch to people that really don't care one way or the other. I'm sure they wouldn't like to hear this but then they should sell them to us period. I'm going to do what I have to do to get them if needed.

totally agree...it follows what PWK liked to do himself and promoted to others...maybe with this new attitude and ownership they may open up...

I need to downsize some of my speakers and gear and focus on a couple or few ;) rather than the so many I currently have...

Bill that's exactly what I did! No regrets either.

I purchased them through the UK importers, providing them with the part number. There was never any question about my intention and it didn't seem to be an issue.

Having listened for a couple more weeks, I can confirm that the sound is improved. There is less distortion, more midrange detail (easier to hear words in complex music), and bass dynamics have improved too.

The change is easy. One thing I did when I had the units out again to check on polarity was to put a thin ring of blutak between the diaphragm surround and the horn because I noticed the horn surface was not quite flat. I felt this improved the sound too.

Just ordered a pair. I sent Klipsch Service an e-mail yesterday, got a response this morning with the part number etc. I called in the order. No hassles, should have them in a week or so.

For those interested the Klipsch part number is 127122 and the phone number is 800-554-7724 ext 3139 8-5 Eastern.

No hassles at all when I ordered mine. As long as you know what you are asking for, they just give you a price a ship them out. I suspect that if you are asking lots of questions about which driver will work, etc., they may be less willing to supply them. They did warn me that installing them was entirely at my own risk.

As has been mentioned in other threads, it is almost as expensive to buy just the Ti diaphragms as it is to buy the entire driver, horn and all. (I now have a set of spare drivers).
