Replacing Klipsch Midrange Diaphragms wi

Of course they miss things. Of course they try things that don't work well. They might even get that mistake past their ears or my ears or your ears, but they will not get it past their test equipment. So, if they missed the mass of that passive by an enormous amount like 2.5 to 3 ounces, the test equipment would have caught it. There is little doubt that adding that mass would make the passive go lower, but in speakers there is ALWAYS a trade off. If it goes lower, it will produce more distortion, or give up efficiency or lose response somewhere in it's range.

Bob: I agree with you 100%. For any trade off and the reason(s) behind it we may agree or disagree. What you find acceptable and what I find acceptable and what Klipsch find acceptable may well be different. Just because something does or does not not work for Klipsch does not mean that has to be the case for everyone else. So yes you are right there is "always" a trade off. Best regards Moray James.
 
Guidance on mid range

Greetings,
Am looking for some additional feedback prior to upgrading my mid-range.
My speakers have Bob Crites crossovers & titanium diaphrams. (Forte II fronts,
Quartet surrounds with Academy center & Academy rears.)

I'd like to upgrade the mid-range but cannot decide what is in my best interests.
for the Forte's and Quarte's. Klipsch K-53ti or Bob's diaphrams?

What are your thoughts?
I use my system for everything: HT, Lp's, SACD, DVD-A etc..

Well since you have Forte II's Bob's drops right in and they are only about $70 and certainly are better then the stock units. I feel they needed some break in time but after 40-50hrs on them I was very satisfied with them.

The Ti will cost $165/pair if you can get them. They are worth every penny IMO. You may want to go with Bob's bandpass networks with them as their HF response is greater then the stock units or Bob's mids, you have an over lap issue to deal with especially with the Forte II. As Bob pointed out.

K-53 ti & Band Pass Network

I am leaning towards trying to get the K 53Ti's. However I am not really a DIY'er and have no idea what a band pass network is. Would I have to reship my crossovers back to Bob and request that they do it? Or is it a relatively easy thing for me to do here with some simple soldering?

Is it possible to order the outboard band pass from BC and install as easily as it was to install the crossovers?

More guidance for the neophyte please...
 
Its as easy as this, and yes Bob has a small board that you can add.

Bob sells the bandpass assembled on a small cedar board similar to his crossovers. To install, you simply splice it into the lines between the mid driver and the crossover. Very easy.
 
I've been MIA for quite some time but am very intrigued about these K53 Ti upgrades for my Forte II's. I just called Klipsch trying to order them but they said they were out of stock until January for some reason :tears:. Is there any other source I could try ordering from?

I called Bob Crites today and ordered the crossover mods for mine. There is definitely a "harshness" that the stock mids did not have.

Question for Mr. Crites re: the midrange bandpass add-on board - I have your crossovers in my Fortes ( mounted on the angled board under the passive radiator and terminal cup inside the cabinet of each speaker), and I was wondering where these additional boards would best be placed in the speaker cabinet. Further, doesn't the additional volume occupied by your boards - both the full crossovers and the band pass filters - in the speaker cabinet technically alter the tuning of the speaker? Or is the space they occupy too small to generate a measurable difference?
 
The volume of the added board is just not significant. Probably less than 1/2 of 1 percent of the interior volume. The cabinets vary more than that in just normal manufacturing tolerance.

The small boards could mount either in the bottom of the cabinet or on the side of the cabinet.

Would there be any advantage to upgrading a Klipsch Heresy II's tweeter to the K-107 from Klipsch Parts Dept versus just upgrading the K-76 to a titanium diaphragm? I am unable to locate any objective or subjective discussion on the matter.
I am clear on the benefits and necessity to upgrade the crossover with the bandpass when updating to titanium on the mids.

There is not a lot of difference between the two tweeters sound wise they both sound very good with ti diaphragms. I am actually using the K79 (same as a K76) in my H3 in place of the stock tractrix unit. The K79 is an exponential profile and so matches the K701 mid horn (also exponential) used and the K79 is a deeper horn than the H3 tweeter horn so in that respect it gets that much closer to aligning with the mid horn, mounting inside the cabinet would help by an additional 3/4" offset. I modify my K79 using some F-11 felt and a 38 mm ball as a diffraction device wedged into the horn. You might want to play with this and see what you think. I fully realize the this likely sounds very radical but I can assure you that this does in fact work very well. Incidentally I do a similar mod but with a 40 mm ball in the K701 as well.
