Sansui Au-9500 NTE infested

Hello , I just aquired a Sansui Au-9500 that shows no signs of life. After inspection everything looks super clean but every transistor is a NTE. Any thoughts

Ill post some nudies before I start to restore it to its natural state. I just cant sleep not knowing what transistors are really there
 
That may or may not be better than the originals. It was SUPPOSED to have some 2SA726s, 2SC1313s, and probably other NLB transistors.

This is perhaps one of the rare cases where NTE parts may be an improvement. You might as well buy another ammo-pack of KSC1845s and KSA992s and a quarter-pounder of Kester 44 just to be sure.

Well now I know why someone replaced every transistor with NTE's. SO now time to upgrade to KSC1845's , 992's and the rest
 
Thats a keen effort to replace all with NTE!!

And yup, there are a lot of "black list" transistors in that model!! Get 'em all out of there....
 
Wow, did the whole thing in NTE? That was a bit spendy, since their stuff was always individually bagged for retail sale, and usually no quantity discounts by my recollection. Remember getting some oddball TV control IC's (CRT era) from them to do repairs here and there when the OEM part wasn't readily available. Those worked ok, but their transistors were sometimes only a rough substitute and not entirely suited to a critical application. I never used their stuff (nor ECG or Thomson subs either when they were still around) unless it was a last resort, or a very simple circuit being repaired or prototyped.

One other thing: NTE transistor subs often had different lead configuration from OEM, and you had to be careful to get them installed right and not mix up the lead order.
 
As a good troubleshooting practice, I would suggest that you find the problem of "no signs of life", before you go replacing all the NTE transistors. Get it working, and then if you want, start to replace the NTE transistors in a controlled manner. Replacing all those transistors in a unit that isn't working, can create additional problems (incorrect lead configuration/placement, as well as damaged circuit traces). While the unit could have been one where it failed as someone tried replacing the original transistors,
I would think that another issue has come up, causing the current "no signs of life" because NTE's were big replacements many years ago, and now they are no longer available, hard to find, or counterfits. Look for blown fuses, high DC on the output stage (check DC balance settings), or bad regulator supplies.
 
for some unknown reason this topic brought me to watch the Mouser TO-3 transistor prices and I think they went up quite a bit since a few years ago.

It took me a bit to figure out what "Pine-Ear" meant.

Tariffs have been raising prices on everything. Digi-key has been pretty explicit about it. Prices at both Digi-key and Mouser are up.

Ok , Thank you Tom I better take that aproach, I believe this was done in early 80's acording to person who sold it too me. So that makes sence and the soldering and clean up was immaculate!
