Schiit Fans ?

I did contact Schiit C/S (see post #63)

Inputs 1 & 2 are XLR

3 is Phono

4 is USB DAC

5 is line level RCA

I believe I see a difference on the main board between 5 and 4... 3 & 4 appear to be like a plug and play.

I guess a Just An Amp and a Fully Loaded R2 are more different than I thought then. They must use different main boards, as you suspected, because a JAA R2 definitely lists it as having 3 RCA and 2 Balanced inputs. A shame you can't go backwards with a FL R2, if desired? Still, I'm glad you're liking it. Rumors have it that Schiit might have some other amp designs appearing this year, fates permitting. An amp that can be bridged, and work into 4 Ohms loads, would be sweet.

It's mine now... I believe I got a good price considering it is almost new and is the 'Fully Loaded' one

The main reason for this post tho... How two different XLR cables can sound

I always thought the Monoprice ones were solid and a good buy... still believe that

With nothing changed except cables between Cambridge CXN2 and Rag2 the music is a good bit sharper and crisper , not shrill tho. Singers' diction/enunciation seems more spot on

The cables changed to are Blue Jeans Belden 1800F XLR

The Monoprice are more mellow and has a rounder/smoother sound

I guess it would be a personal choice thing

Need opinions:
I would love to purchase a Schiit Aegir. Really can only afford one for now, with a preamp. Do you think I can get by with one for now if I have the following criteria?:
89 dB sensitivity bookshelf speakers
Powered subwoofer handling lowest frequencies
Measured loudest SPL I normally ever listen to is about 80dB (measured 1 m from speaker), 85dB in very rare circumstances.
Preamp would either be a Saga + or Freya +
Room is large, but the setup is a "mid-field" type, about 7-8' away from 7' spread speakers. 80db @ 1m is plenty volume for me normally.

A Vidar would solve the power problem, but if I am spending about the same for 1 amplifier, I want the midrange tonality of the Aegir. One good thing is that I can always add another down the line. But, would like to enjoy music with one until that time comes.

Your listening habits mirror mine, as I listen at moderate levels too. Though, with the Aegir, the impedance load, is an important factor too. So, if the speakers are 4 Ohm or less, I'd suggest the Vidar. But, if the speakers are an easy 8 Ohm load, an Aegir should work fine.

I do admit, monoblock Aegir amps would be sweet. Unfortunately, I don't think they'd handle my ARs. Maybe the new amps, Jason has been teasing, would do the trick?

Edit: One other thought, if you do want to eventually set up monoblock amps, you'll need the Freya+ preamp. A dual amp system requires balanced connections, which the Saga+ lacks.

Thanks for responding.
My speakers (GR Research X-LS Encore, w/ all upgrades, which I love) are a pretty stable 8 ohm load and don't dip too far down.
Yeah, the preamp will be a if/then situation with the balanced mono setup. Wouldn't be the end of the world to resell/upgrade from the Saga to the Freya if I go down the monoblock route in the future. Who knows, Schiit may just have some new fangled thing by then. LOL
Oh, BTW, I had a GFA-5400 from the mid 90s for about 10 years. Loved it...kinda regret selling it some days.

@CabeAllen

---> FWIW <---

Steve Guttenberg said he really like the Rag2 as a PreAmp only driving an Aegir

And if you ever got a pair of Aegir the Rag2 has balanced XLR outs

Initially I couldn't decide between a Vidar and an Aegir. I went with a Vidar because from what I read it would probably be more tailored to my taste.

My plan was to spend some time with the Vidar and then get an Aegir for another system in the house and I'd have the ability to compare. I liked the Vidar so much that I now have two of them. I can't say that I feel like I'm missing out on any midrange magic that the Aegir is supposed to have because the Vidar does sound damn good. Warm, refined with some really tight bass.

I really would like to get an Aegir to compare, though. Curiosity might just get the best of me....

Something I found out about the Rag2 I haven't read before...

With both lights lit (Hedphone & Speaker) you can use Rag2's internal amp and a second amp connected to the Rag2's PreOuts

Which can lead to some interesting options

Fooled around with 3 amps as a secondary one to the Rag2... Basically bi-amping

Firstly the second amp must have vol/output controller

Overall , probably not worth the time and effort to do so  However , found the Rag2 to be a very fine PreAmp (driving a 2nd amp only)

The replacement (first one went south on me) Modi3+ sounds wonderful to me. I'll be sending them more of my income eventually.

I received the Aegir yesterday. Not to take anything away from the Vidar but the Aegir is just the amp I was looking for.

I wanted a solid state amp that could rival my beloved restored HH Scott 222c tube amps that get played almost exclusively in my fully treated 19x13x8 listening room with 102db sensitive speakers. Normal volume levels in this room are 72db. I have another high powered system in the house for rocking out hard north of 115db but this system is just for low level critical listening.

The Aegir in my system excels in midrange tonality. A full, warm, smooth sound that is very comparable to my tube amps. It makes me want to keep listening....like my tube amps. The Vidar, as good as it sounds in my system lacks this ability.

I think that a lot of the reviews I read were correct. In my own words I'd say that the more efficient your speakers are, the more you'd want an Aegir. The less efficient your speakers are, the more you'd want a Vidar.

Either way, these amps are an excellent value for the money.

Oh, and I have the Aegir paired with a Saga+ with a NOS Mullard 6SN7. Tempted to try a Freya+ but they don't come in black. Not sure I really need to, though. The performance of the Saga+ with the Aegir is pretty damn good. In fact.....it's really damn good.

Thanks @SWL3600

BTW... the Rag2 is still in my main system w/Klipsch Forte

That's cool....I've read good things about that unit. I'd be tempted to try it out but I think I'm gonna be pretty attached to the Aegir for a while. I'm using it with some heavily modified/upgraded KLF-30's and I think the Aegir was made for efficient horn loaded speakers first and foremost.

Tubes and horns? Oh yeah. Aegir and horns? Definitely.
