This is 1979.....this is a true monopole with a two way speaker in - line with the three way below. Due to the baffle for the rear midrange, I called it the lollipop system. The bass cabinet has a panel down the middle with three reflectors in the corners to eliminate standing waves and reflections off the back wall. The 12" Audio Concepts AC12 was crossed over @ 700 hz to a Phillips 5" 5061/M8 with the wizzer cone cut off. This was my most complex "acoustic death chamber" with four labyrinth channels coming off the speaker lining up with the four holes in the basket. It was crossed over @ 7000 hz to a early Seas polymide dome tweeter. I had high crossover points to allow high power handling as I liked to hammer out the tunes in my younger years. The tweeter loved this crossover point anyway. In the back I used the same Phillips midrange in a closed back version and a Peerless tweeter. The whole system was 4 ohms to get the most from my 200 watt/ channel amp by Heathkit. I also soaked the paper cones in my special oily preparation to get rid of paper noise to great effect. Drivers were lined up by ear for time alignment and felt around everything for diffraction. Narrow cabinet around tweeters for dispersion. This was my first "magic" speaker. Goose bumps came easily.

Altec Center Channel

Great thread!

Here's the center channel that I built to compliment Altec Model 19 main speakers in my home theater. The goal was to build something with similar voicing to the Model 19's, and have it fit above the TV. The cabinet is a re-shaped / flattened Altec 9844 studio monitor with two 12" Altec 414-16Z woofers, an 811B horn with 802-8G compression driver, and a Model 19 crossover. I designed the cabinet in AutoCAD, had the pieces of wood cut on an industrial router table, and a friend assembled the cabinet. This was a fun project - I've been enjoying the speaker for several years now!

The three way from 1979 is cool, lots of planning in that rig. The Altec system is a stunna! I bet that sounds great, you have me thinking....
 
I built these "statement monitors" following instructions over at parts express before picking up my cornwalls. They are very well designed. Set up properly people rarely believe so much well balanced sound can come from such a small package, especially the low bass. Right now I am lending them to a friend until I can convince him to go with some rf81s. One day maybe I'll make them less ugly lol

This is the only picture I have and I built it 25 years ago for a fireplace showroom I built. I didn't know anything about Thiele-Small theory, but it has some CHEAP Chruchfield 4ohm car speakers; 4-12" sub-woofers in the pyramid hanging from the ceiling and 4-6.5" woofers and 4- piezo super tweeters, one each in each ceiling corner angled down at a 30 degree angle with opposite corners on the same branch of the stereo channels (does that make sence?).

I have no idea what the internal volume is (I should model it in AutoCAD and find out) and the pyramid has a 3/4 x 3/4" reflex slot running along the edge of the 3' sides of the pyramid base.

It sounded OK, but the subs were lacking in lows and had something to be desired...(edit; I don't understand why not, since it is pyramid powered):)

What do you think about the Alpairs? I have the 10.2s in a small office system and they are pretty good IMHO. I have thought about trying the 7.3 above a helper woofer in a bookshelf style speaker such a Large Advent or maybe a Dayton Parts Express RS-180 from about 250hz.

Are you saying your Center Channel has dual 12's in it... It's just so beautiful... You make men everywhere proud... I have to go wipe these tears away...
