Again it's not so much the size (can't believe I wrote this)...it's the make/brand, build (mag/material). Do your legwork to find out what's out there and what others think. Personally, I prefer the Brit Wharfedale, but that's just my bias.

The largest home woofer I'm aware of was the 30" Electro-Voice model 30W driver used in the EV Patrician. This driver was also sold under the University name. The driver was used by DIYers in rather large boxes; I once had enclosure plans from EV that included a 72 cubic foot box for the 30W.

The Hartley Concertmaster used a 24" woofer, made by Hartley (as were the upper bass and mid drivers) that used an odd enclosure. It was a large enclosure stuffed with fiberglass but with an acoustically open back covered by a screen. A friend had a pair and they had bass that was deep, clean and very powerful. Excellent speakers that few of the jaspers here talk about. Maybe they should have called the speaker the SX something or other, SX sells.

Anyway the big woofer was evidently underdamped as shown by it's enclosure and the success a fella in Speaker Builder magazine reported using one in an open baffle to augment his Quad ESLs.

The larger the woofer, the more the cone flexes. The bigger the cone the heavier and slower they respond.

A fast woofer is a tweeter.

Higher mass can be accelerated by a stronger motor and many large woofers have very powerful motors and excellent "power to weight" ratios that provide both excellent acceleration and damping. In any event in many uses a woofer need only respond to bass inputs; note that many large woofers aren't intended to respond to high enough frequencies where flex occurs.

If interested in specs.

Not sure if these are marketed for home use but they are big. Fostex offers a 30inch woofer for home use if I remember that correctly. The text is what I imagine is going on behind the scenes. I'm at work till Thursday and bored.

Check the post right before yours, it's still available and actually 31.5".

I saw that, those where posted while I was writing my post. Thanks
The first picture is a Nelson Pass design and uses a 4" driver. There is NO large driver used in those speakers.
I was referring to the OP asking about big cabinets. I just posted big speakers. I would love to hear anyone of those set ups.

um.... what did I just read???

After all the post relating to wife friendly speakers, I thought the dialogue was funny referring to the pictures of the huge setups. They are imaginary conversations between the wives and fellows who own the huge systems. I could have written it like a script, that would have taken two pages. Sorry about the lack of spacing and punctuation. I wasn't trying to highjack the post, the OP asked about really big speakers so I assumed it related to the content in a funny way. Just like speakers, humor is subjective opinion.

I can't find the URL currently, but there's a guy out there who's a real organ music enthusiast. He was unhappy with the bass produced by his Infinity IRSes (6 12" servo-controlled woofers per channel) so he sold those and built his own DIY wall using 3 30" EV woofer (plus some other drivers) per channel.

Below is a pic with his wife standing in front, but if you can find the original page, it's an interesting read.
