Well my Epi M1000 are big, ... but uses eight 8" drivers and not monster 30" drivers.
That just brought back memories
-- my first pair of speakers as a teenager were EPI 150's- single 8" woofer and the EPI 1" tweeter, 2-way... those 8" woofers had Fs @ 18Hz, and Xmax of 12.5mm... very impressive performance for the time. Wish I still had them, I'd EWave them (God Bless Zilch). I recall lusting over the original EPI 1000's- a roughly 18" x 18" x 78" tall omni tower, as I remember, with 4 woofs and 4 tweets, one of each on all 4 sides...
Since then, I've discovered the joy of constant directivity systems with waveguides...
but we digress, I'll try to get back closer to "on topic": I have a pair of (probably 80's) vintage Hartley 18" woofers. Closely matched pair, one gently used, the other factory re-coned and shipped to me by Hartley. These things are ridiculous... I haven't measured them, but from what I can glean from various sources, they have Fs around 17Hz, Qts around 0.035 (!) and Vas of 53 cu Ft (!).... WAF will not permit large refrigerator-sized boxes or huge horns. Entire system must be noticeably smaller than an Altec A5
. I've played with various small box alignments (<5cuFt) and it's just stupid. So I'm considering trying them OB/Dipole... Hartley also made (still makes, in fact) their 24" Super-woofer.
