So That's A Decent Direct Drive Table? OK I Will Take It

Don't get me wrong, my SP-15 is a very good table and in excellent health. I have yet to get it to resolve detail or produce the sort of soundstage I get with my old Ariston RD11s, however. This is not to say that I won't continue trying. There were some experiments done awhile back by an AK'er using an adjustable weight to bleed off vibration from the motor/bearing that apparently did an excellent job. I wish I could recall the thread. I'm not sure I would do it the same way, but it seems like an aspect to be investigated.

Cool Fiddlefye - keep trying - with the right cart - perhaps arm - you should be golden.

Going back to listening to music between the tables - and loving them both (but not searching for anything better - I'm good!)

Hmm...the SP10Mk.II measurement is using a DIN standard, the other three are IEC98A. I wonder if that accounts for the discrepancy. Details of the differences between the Mk.II and Mk.2A are hard to come by.

I have, and have worked on, both. The MKII uses 5 series logic while the MK2A electronics are a significant redesign using proprietary ICs. From mechanical and electrical specs on the motor, and physical appearance they look to be the same. I haven't opened a MK2A motor yet, so I can't comment on that but I'd be very surprised to find a difference.

Again - if the table is operating within spec - and dead silent - if the pig hears some difference and reports some major findings - - I'm just not buying it.

Sure - there are Technics fans on AK - but many put up with the negative comments - I have always argued back (5 plus years here) - and when I did argue with Mr Pig (couple of years back) - I agreed - Ok - I'll buy a 2K+ dollar table so I can hear the major upgrade - we'll I've done that - and to be honest - sure it sounds sweet - but that was no major upgrade - in fact - it sounds about the same - I cannot tell much difference - I'm still young I think at 49(??) - I love the VPI - and certainly consider it my main table - but only because of the beauty - in reality - the Technics is hard to beat - it really doesn't do anything worse than the VPI.

I will not be giving up either table - I love having them so that I can at least understand these so called comparisons.

For what it is worth.

Cheers.

Interesting and I largely agree with you there.

If we take the subject a little further, wouldn't you say you'd prefer the Technics if they looked the same outside because at the end of the day you don't need to replace the belt periodically?

I could have easily been happy with the Technics as my last table - and looks wise - it is an M5G - so it is pretty beautiful on it's own - but being member here - I've always been put in the position that I was missing out - so my haunted gear mind wanted that beautiful VPI Classic - with the big fat platter - and so on my own - I bought it (I don't blame anyone) - and I'm glad that I did - only because it is so different from the Technics - beltdrive, massive platter, unipivot arm, 10 inch arm - anyhow - they contrast each other wonderfully - and because they are so great - they both keep up with one another.

With the VPI - this Sunday - the platter looked nasty - two inches of polished aluminum spinning - with all kinds of finger prints, snot etc, - I was playing some Art Farmer - on the Technics below - while polishing the VPI platter on the top shelf - absolutely no skips - which I attribute to the Isonoe Feet of the Technics (which people here seem to say - if the technics was so good why upgrade..)

Anyhow - the VPI is great - but dancing near it - or polishing the platter will cause major skips - whereas the Technics - can handle the shacking - dance floor and not skip- no matter how many beers you have had.

Sorry - perhaps too long of an answer!

So we are going down the road of Technics hater again. And apparently what I can and cannot hear. Apparently I am going to spend a kilobuck to buy the table, do the work to find an plinth and arm, spend many more hundreds..... so I can talk bad about the Technics. Whatever.

No I do not think the SP15 and 25 are the end all, of tables. They are darn solid, but not exceptional. This is my experience... but not just mine. post #133 of this thread provides some validation to what I heard. Read it if you want.

I am not a Technics fan boy, but not a hater either. Heck I have recommended the SL1200 to some people when it fits their needs.

That's a long answer regarding which I thank you but it still fails to address my question :smoke:

Sorry - to address your question:

Yes - I'd prefer the Technics - though the belt on the VPI is thick - and I bet it would last forever - but I could easily be happy with the Technics as my last table - and use the $$ to buy more vinyl vs chasing tables endlessly.

Yes! I'm a bigtime Technics fanboy as per your derogatory comments - and proud of it - and do not hide behind a fake animal username. I fell for your opinion - and spent some cash on a table I didn't need - but that is on me for not trusting my own ears. Good luck with your review.

Ah costerdock is your given name... sorry I didn't recognize that. Do you prefer to go by coster or Mr Dock? I didn't realize that internet etiquette required the use of formal names. I suspect most people on AK are in violation of this.

Now I called you nothing so far, and I certainly wont allow you to goad me into it. Nice of you to come in here and crap in this thread. I certainly don't recall telling you to buy a VPI, as I have never owned a Classic. I would suspect its a nice table, but you were within your rights to return it if you didn't think it better than your 1200...or sell it... like I did with the 25 & 15.

Why don't you go crawl back under whatever rock you came from and let people enjoy their time on AK.

Let's see - Go F myself? I'd be banned for using language like that - Technics Fanboy? (which I'm proud to be thank you!)

I'll go back under my rock and hide from the likes of you and your turntable opinions. Your opinion of the SP15 and SP25 are meaningless internet drivel. Enjoy the SP10 - I'm sure because of this encounter you will somehow like it. I'm just at a complete loss as to how someone could not like the SP15, SP25 and then like the SP10 - but that is me.

Me pig,

As a recently-updated-generic-type (1210 M5G) technics owner and hater-lover, the secret to the "singing" technics is hidden on the plinth.

What I did was removing the black rubber inside of the 1200 and it started to sing.

Untill recently, I hate messy bolts and things laying around. So, I decided to re install the hard black rubber back into 1200.

To my surprise, everything sounded dead and the bass sounded unnatural. While it doesn't sound as enjoyable without the inner hard black rubber, I can hear subtle sound.

Tonight, I'm planning to re-remove that rubber.

Oh, the feets are isomoe. The silver ones sounds better and more lively than the black ones.

Power transformer is removed from the body of the turntable and replaced with outside SMPS 20VDC supply.

Electronic circuit is/are optimized for "perfect" AC performance. Consequently, there is no enough starting torque, so, I have to turn the spinning table manually and let the speed "stabilize" and then drop the tonearm.

Hope that the "plinth magic" would also apply to those radio station technics as well to Garard.
I wish I had a garrard 401. The 401 looks sexy and modern although I believe it is very sensitive to what plinth is it paired with.

I wish you Good luck on the Technics journey you have choosen to experience.

I think you're missing the point a bit in what Mr. P is about in this. As stated he didn't think the SP-15 and 25 were bad tables, far from it. What they didn't do for him was reach the levels of resolution etc. he was looking for and with a good table or two already in the stable to compare to. He even went to the bother of shifting arms from one table to the other to level the field as much as he could. If the 15 and 25 didn't make the cut for him that is what he heard in his system. As a stated I haven't got my SP-15 to resolve quite as well as my RD11s, especially in terms of soundstage. This is an area I will be addressing in the not-distant future, first with an arm change or two and finally with some plinth experiments. In the initial configuration I got it in I found the sound of the SP-15 to be very clean and clinical, but with a somewhat constricted stage compared to the aforementioned Ariston (which has an unusually "open" sound). I'm hoping to find a path that takes things more in that direction without losing the more "clinical" aspect.

I have read a bit about someone taking the PS outboard on a SP-15 and claiming it made a noticeable difference. Of course the SP-10 starts out that way.

Whilst I can appreciate your frustration costerdock it does seem you're fussed a little too much.
It's entirely for Mr Pig to enjoy or criticise whatever comes under his scrutiny. What gives?

Not only it is noticeable but it's a HUGE DIFFETENCE, the power supply is the Humming 60Hz and it's harmonics CULPRIT.

I am wondering if I choose SMPS, will the noise be ultrasonic... Hehehe
I have 4700uF capacitor and reversed switching diode (plus power supply connected to negative part of diode) inside the 1200 tho. It has to be 4700 uF nicichon from RadioShack to make the speed "right". It's not really noticable but when I put more 4700uF x2 , the sound of music being produced is not as effortless as one 4700 uF. Not really sure why tho... It's magic, psychic, multi-densional, quantum world stuff I'm (probably) talking about here. Hehehe:banana::banana::banana:

Just my experience arguing with this guy for the last 3-4 years. I do not value his opinion. I'll say no more.
