Sony 2251 and/or 2250 owners thread

Wow OK Duane didn’t realize it was getting that serious. Good luck with your next group of treatments. Looking forward to seeing the table completed.
Cheers

PS if it gets to the point that you don’t feel like building the clone, feel free to box up all the parts and such and ship it to me and I’ll finish it for you.

This sure seems like a great table. Got it running for another hour now, just to be sure of no issues. Love the light touch switches and overall feel of this table, too! Put a record on and got my Discwasher brush out.. Plenty more torque than my Luxman PD-272 has!

Since I’m not wanting to shim up the feet on this nice 2251 to level it, what are all doing to level these out? Has anyone converted to adjustable feet?

Yes, my custom plinth has adjustable feet.

And who doesn’t appreciate naked ladies.. :)

The 834 clone will be started on again soon, I hope.. As long as I’m feeling able.
Been feeling pretty bad for a while now but wanted to get this 2251 to the point where my kids won’t stick it out for a yard sale when I’m gone. Like I write, really bad lately.. :(

Ouch.

My best wishes for you.

Now, the plinth with the TTS-2500 fitted.

Out the belt drive 2310, in the 2500.

Now, the belt drive sounded really good and comparable, although the speed stability (wow) is better on the DD. On the other hand it has a pretty crap belt...

But the belt drive Sonys of this form factor are serious stuff too...

Found some that should work well, are adjustable - and won’t break the bank. Stupid sticked would be removed, of course. Inner brass spike unscrews for height adjustment..

There are lots of fancier ones out there but I wanted functionality and not for ‘em to stand out..

I may keep looking and see some I like better.. There are some that look much like the old Mod Squad “tip toes” but not sure if I can make em adjustable though they appear to be threaded..

Used something very similar on Bill’s plinth for his Russco, worked great

If it's okay, back to this question. I was told a long time ago by some "expert," not to shim, increase or decrease the height of the turntable's corners, too much. Adjust the bookshelf or what it is sitting on to get that sitting surface as close to level as possible.

Then, really, use nothing fatter than a few playing cards to perfectly level the turntable --- only if need be.

I don't recall that man's name --- but it was on some audiophile board. He did me one favor. I have no problems changing turntables or moving them around, in terms of being level. ;)

When I moved here, I shimmed the legs of a heavy table I used for my turntable. This 2251 will be going on something a little harder to shim, my big and heavy Barzilay audio cabinet which is sitting on a not quite level floor.. 2251 and that cabinet were made around the same time, BTW.
Right after I got the Barzilay - completely different gear in / on it now..

Anyway, I ordered two different sets of adjustable feet (relatively cheap) and will likely remove the originals and put ‘em away.

While waiting for the adjustable feet I bought, thought I’d try something different…
Some corks I had here were bored with a Forstner bit just a tiny bit less in depth than the original feet, then placed over the originals..
Moving’em around a little, and PRESTO - it’s level.
I may just paint these black, put a little dab of silicone in the hole and call it done once in position. Should dampen vibrations from the cabinet, too - there’s a good inch of cork under each foot..

Not sure they need paint, makes a nice contrast and conversation item :naughty:

Looks like you may not be able to really see much of those corks --- at least not while you are standing.

To be really anal, painting the cork may alter their sonic quality!!!

I would suggest getting some springs (as long as they compress halfway with the weight of the TT they're fine) and fill them in with foam. This would make ideal feet. You are placing the speakers in the same surface as the TT so it's important to decouple the TT as much as possible.

In this way we can prevent Kenny McCormick's untimely death.

No, I’m really not..

The bookshelf speaks were only being tested for a few days at fairly low volume as I’d just picked ‘em up for a super price at a thrift store..! I don’t normally have any speakers up there. :)
They do want way more power than that little SE tube amp puts out though.. Those are Angstrom Legato bookshelf speakers BTW - not very efficient..

The Sony suspension must be good. It's sitting right next to (12-inches) from my speakers (including a sub on the floor). Never had feedback or rumble problems.

I do have an acrylic slab and a sandbox under my Sony. So I'm sure that helps.
