Yes it was you and I realized after posting they are angle attach. That company only has black ones that are flat....so your search continues.
 
I just bought 2 Sound dynamics sds 10 bookshelves speakers with 2 stands in mint condition... for 30 canadian dollars... The woofer is 8 inches,(instead of 10 inches) the sensivity is 90 db,(instead of 100 db) and the weight is 30 pounds, (instead of 46 pounds) they are written for 85 watts max(instead of the 60 watts for the brochure 10sds)....They dont match the brochure description of the Sds 10...But the description and logo of the company are behind each of the speakers and very descriptive, and it is written 10s...The front grill is a kind of fabric cloth covering the entire speakers very firmly attached to the box by a wooden frame...The port hole is behind ...I am curious to listen to them... Is this model a rare one? Nobody speaks about some 10s model fitting this description of mine....My best to all brothers...

Is there anyone who knows about their sound quality compared to other sound dynamics models ?


Is the sds-10 s from 1990 a cheap or more refine improved version of the older 10-s ? If someone know about that i welcome him...

I have not come across this particular model (it's SD-10S, not SDS-10S), but I think it is fairly safe to assume that they do not fall within the same category as the 10S. From your post & link and google search:

Grills glued onto cabinets - while not always an indicator of quality (think Paradigm Atom / Titan / Phantom), it's often a sign of 'built to a price point' strategy.
Silver dust caps on drivers - again, often a sign of not the highest quality components.

API / Global did make speakers as house brands for big-box and audio retailer chains to use in 'package system'. There were also some later series of Sound Dynamics targeted at home theater use. I suspect these, perhaps might fall into the house brand category for big-box store 'package' systems.

For example, my wife had a system when we got married that was purchased mid-80s from a big-box store. Low-power Technics receiver, a decent Technics P-mount quartz-lock turntable and a pair of Audio Pulse 1235 speakers, made by API. Those speakers most certainly were house brands (in this case the store was The Brick) ... and were also actually sold in Canadian Radio Shacks under the Optimus (I believe) brand (I purchased a pair from there for a group I was involved with at about the same time).

I also see a note on another website that Sound Dynamics 'SDM' models were built as a house brand for Future Shop (and interestingly perhaps they look oh so much like Audio Pulse!). API also made a brand called dB-Plus, also starting as a house brand (I think Toronto-based audio retailer whose name escapes me). And there was also the Paisley SPL series, which may or may not have been a house brand (I think these two latter examples were a few notches up the scale in terms of quality).

I would first move this question into the Dollars and Sense section.
Nobody can determine a value on them without seeing the cosmetic condition of them and knowing the full functional condition.
 
Wow, I am really surprised there are still people posting on this thread to this year. As the original post stated it is really hard to find information online about this wonderful speaker brand.

A couple of months ago I snagged a pair of RTS-11 as a porch pickup on Craigslist for $25 and boy was that ever money well spent. I just got some tinned silver OFC and a couple of lawn bricks for them in addition to some floor spikes I got off Amazon a few weeks ago and I couldn't be happier. I was wondering as a reference if anyone had heard these bad boys and if they had an idea of what they would compare to today and I guess eventually what would be considered a possible upgrade to these a few years down the road.

Finally found some info I had received many moons ago, it seems to be a slightly different version of the S series spec sheet that contains a listing for the 1200SMT's. Posting here as it may be of interest to the group.
Recently restored a near mint set of 1200SMT's found in a "Goodwill" store for $20, Will post some pics soon.

Hello Sound Dynamics owners, my dad has a pair of 1200 SMT's he bought brand new in 1983 and I just had my technician/friend work on them. He has a bunch of experience working on vintage stereo equipment along with rebuilding crossovers and improving the sound quality from them.

So, there was an issue with one of the speakers and it had very little noise coming out of the tweeter, so I bought a tweeter from Ebay thinking that was the issue. Well it wasn't. I tried the new tweeter along with the suspect tweeter on the known good speaker, and they worked flawlessly (wish I would've thought of that to begin with). The technician then deemed the problem to be with the crossovers and he went ahead and replaced the capacitors with new, upgraded ones on both speakers. When I listened to them first first time after the crossover rebuild, the highs were coming out of the sub woofer. So I brought the speakers back to him and he rerouted the FH signal (not sure what that means) and when I tested them, they sounded great, with plenty of highs.... up until I turned the volume to about half way on my Pioneer SA-8800 and there was so much staticy noises coming out of the tweeters you couldn't even make out what the singer was saying. When you turn the volume down again, the tweeters sound great (I tried two different sources; the tuner, and my phone connected to the AUX port. Same result with both sources at higher volume levels). Prior to the crossover going bad in the first place, these speakers would handle that power level without issue. So now the technician is stuck and isn't sure on the next step to take since it's mind boggling that he ONLY replaced the capacitors and then this issue came about. He's been searching for a schematic for the crossovers but can't seem to find anything on the internet. If anyone knows where he can find this schematic or has access to it, I would love to send it over to him so he can take a look at it.

Time to make a new tech. friend... Sorry. The noise is probably from dirty volume pot and/ or switches on your Pioneer.
 
turboyam, the Pioneer was fully recapped and rebuilt this year in June. Just to make sure that it wasn't the amp itself, I tried my Accusound dual 12's as well as my Paradigm MK3 9SE and they do not make that static/distortion noise. I can keep going with the volume for my two sets of speakers and prior to the crossover rebuild, my dad's Sound Dynamics would outperform my two speakers.

Ok then make SURE there is no bass going to the tweeters!
 
Couple thoughts ... I don't think the spun aluminum horns had ferrofluid ... only the black version ... but you never know ... and it may be dried out. However, regardless, distortion may be indicative of failing / damaged voice coils. Also you have HF attenuators on those speakers ... have they been cleaned? You could, I suppose, swap in some different (cheap!) tweeters and see if the distortion is still there (indicating the issue is with the crossover). You can also download Audacity ... there is a hack to add frequency sweep capability, allowing you to test out the tweeters separate from the crossover, at various volume levels (PC to amp to tweeters, removed from the speakers).

I can get them for 100 bones and they look nice but I think that the woofers may have been replaced or had new cones and surrounds.
Can anyone here give me an idea of what they look like to you. Thanks
 
I don't think they are original. 12S had plain cones (no ribs). But just from the proportions, I think those are 10S, which do have ribbed cones ... but with a different pattern. The gaskets aren't correct either.
 
Also the orange square next to the speaker terminals probably says 10S in darker orange. I've only seen white stickers with black text for 12S.
