Sound Dynamics did indeed make two 15S models. The original model was shorter, wider and looked more squat. The second version was taller and more narrow. I have never heard the newer model and still own the originals. I would imagine the newer model that you own would be an improvement over the original since the front baffle is narrower and the tweeter might be higher and more at the listener's ear level. It would be interesting to compare the two!
If you still have the original drivers for the 10S then I would encourage you to either re-foam them or have them re-foamed for you. The drivers from the original S series (and the CM Concert Monitor series) were over-built and truly world-class. While I had my 15S drivers out to do the re-foaming, I had a decent pair of Eminence Technology Pro-Beta 15A (a perfect drop-in fit) in their place. These sounded ok and did the job, but once the originals were put back in the difference was substantial. Sound Dynamics really knew what they were doing back then.
Who knows, the 10S once re-foamed might impress!

I have a pair of 12S's with the original boxes. I use mine in the bedroom. I would really like to know the value of the caps so I can replace them. Also would like to veneer them proper someday. Probably wouldn't ever consider selling them. Had to replace the woofer sourronds ten years ago.
Hey Allen thanks for the response. I am trying to find the original woofers in all my storage stuff. I am trying to track down some of the tweeters as one of mine is not functioning at all. Took it apart in an attempt to diagnose it and couldn't find anything noticeably wrong with it. Have not done a continuity check yet, but I suspect the thin wire wound around the voice coil is shot. Do you or anyone young know have a connection on them? Thanks again

the only "flaw" I see is the absorption material inside does not look uniform through the port(rear).However if I take 1.5 pink pills I don't notice it.
I certainly wouldn't notice sound wise.
They sound great with jazz and for voice I played Leonard Cohen's Live from London

While not yet an owner I will add to the Sound Dynamics mystique. Some college friends had Sound Dynamics as part of their dorm system (New York State, circa '79). I don't remember the model but they were not large by the standards of the day- possibly with 8" or 10" woofers. All I can say is that it was the sweetest sounding system by far- and people had some elaborate systems! I am coveting to this day the sound that he achieved- tight poppy bass, warm without mud or bloat, incredibly smooth midrange and highs- and this was when the air in the room was still clear.
What I wouldn't do to be able to walk into a store right now and buy a set.

I have a pair of R65s... I think that's the model anyway. I bought them for my mother in about 1996 or so. She used them for classical and jazz for about a decade until I got them back under less than ideal circumstances. Been on garage duty since.
I assume they have Mylar tweets and a pretty entry level woofer and crossover components but other than sounding like the tweeter should be about 2dB louder, I think they sound great within their volume limitations. Nicely controlled bass, no aggression in the treble, natural midrange... Definitely more right than wrong.

I picked up a pair of 12s's for dirt cheap. They sounded awesome at the demo....but then being a dumbass....I poked a hole in a surround:tears: They probably needed to be re-foamed anyways, but I was hoping to have a few months of listening before having to do a re-foam.

Hello all I have a pair of 15S bought them new in early 80's and still use them daily. The woofers are replaced for now since I dont find anyone refoam them for a reasonable price and they are replaced with a pair of MGR Pros (yeah I know they are chinese) with same data almost. Never had any problem with the tweeters even I still hear and read so many blow them to .....
One thing I discover after the replace is the woofers is a lot firmer bass not that rumble. Maybe it was the loss of foam doing the change but the MGR's also seems stiffer in the cone and what I read also lighter.

Actually you are wrong a friend of mine have a pair of 8S I know this for sure since his woofers foam blew away some years back and we had a lot of trouble locating anyone refoam them.
They were sold here in Sweden and the shop selling them had all in display.
Lucky I was getting the last pair of 15S and still have the boxes they came in.

I could be wrong, but I doubt Sound Dynamics made an 8S for the Swedish market and didn't sell it in North America, or include it in their sales literature.
A search for the 8S online yields zero results - not even a pic, so I'm inclined to believe you either have the make or model wrong. Of course anything is possible, and if you are able to provide pics or info on the 8S I'd be very happy to see it.
In 79 or 80 I bought 4 SD 15s to go along with my Pioneer SX-1250 and all I can say is WOW! I'm in the market for 1 or 2 sets if anyone has any leads, I moved to the United States in 1990 and just today learned about Kijiji so i'll be keeping an eye out for some. Would be good to find some in Ont. or Que. to help keep shipping affordable. Only interested in 15s, don't be shy to let me know if anyone comes across some.
