They use the voice coil which moves the head assembly, wired to an amplifier.

The head arm has a large coil embedded in it, which works again two powerful neodynimum magnets to move it - much like how a speaker's voice coil works against the magnet to move the cone.

So if you hook a suitable amplifier to the head's coil, it will vibrate and make vaguely musical sounds. :yes:

An engineer I worked did this and it actually sounded on-par with some of the mini iPod speakers or at least no worse. His approached differed slightly in that he had a piece of styrofoam cup attached at 90-degrees to the arm. I'd guess for more radiating surface area?
