Do my speakers have any added protection connected through the Spec 1 rather than connecting them to the Spec 2 directly?

I think you need Echowars to weigh in on this but I think all the protection stuff is in the main amp so either way your covered. If I remember right, Echowars said there are 8 relays in the main amp. With the kind of power it has, I can imagine why we want all that protection.
Just a guess, but I'll bet the speaker connections on the pre-amp are just pass through connections on a switch. No protection there at all. If you can read the schematic, you can probably figure that out.

That can't be lol . . . you should have started a seperate post so other can see.
The speaker signal comes in on the input terminals, goes through one relay and comes out on one set of the output terminals. The other set of output terminals have their own relay paralleled to the input terminals.
The only other connections internally is the 150 ohm 5 watt resistors feeding the headphone jack.
It is a convenience for those folks with two sets of speakers and only one output terminal set on their receiver.
No additional protection advantage, or anything else, is conferred.
Gettin a bit antsy there Bob? According to tracking at 10 am it arrived in Phoenix.
The only other connections internally is the 150 ohm 5 watt resistors feeding the headphone jack.

Thanks for the info Mark. My ole Spec 2 scares me a little and thought I'd maybe have more protection for my speakers. I look forward too seeing your work of art tomorrow.
Now I'm looking for a Pioneer SPEC-22, SPEC-33, SPEC-44 and maybe some HPM 100100's to go with them

Well, the "secret" is out....
As long as it is remembered that my efforts extended mostly into the cosmetic region, disassembling two spec-1 preamps and putting all the pretty and unbroken parts onto one unit. Then making sure everything was at least working correctly.
But I did no recapping etc....
THAT'S saved for the future, for the "ugly" parts unit which I was able to return to full function.
Which included repairing the bent and busted mode switch by transplanting and shortening the
switch mechanism from a sx-550 function switch.

The bottom amp with 4 channels is NOT...
There is NO room for the meter movements which would extend down into the dials of the lower meters, or below the bottom of the chassis.
Alas it is a CRUEL HOAX .....
