The best bookshelf speakers of the 70's

attachment.php

AR-7's :thmbsp: :thmbsp: :thmbsp:

The JBL L-26 gets my vote & EPI(Epicure) Model 10's

Back in the seventy's everything was Big! & made out of real wood, none of this particle board crap with paste on paper veneer,Quality built stuff when the money for research was there and companys like JBL were at the top of their game!Houses & rooms were bigger, cars were HUGE!,you could lay down in the back window when you were a kid and have a nap,and so a normal bookshelf speaker back then was Big compared to todays little dinkers. And amplifiers, well just lift up a big old Sansui,Pioneer or Marantz reciever and you see what I'm talking about. But then my main audio speakers are Altec 19's,so my JBL L-26's are like mini-monitors to me..Seriously if you are looking for a seventy's speaker go get yerself a pair of JBL 4311 Control Monitors(3 ways) with the Brilliance and Precence contols, smaller package than the L-100's and much more handsome inmhop too!..We got ours for a wedding present and its one of two audio things I trully regret selling.EPI 100's or the Epicure Model 10's pretty sure they are the same and are a little more laid back and still give decent bass like the JBL's.My JBL L-26 have just recently recieved new surrounds and the nice Oak cabs are all spruced up and mate real nice with a 70's Pioneer reciever, nice warm big phat tone!.I have mine or metal low level 7 inch stands that tilt back the tweeter, works great!Excellent with seventy's vinyl!...Enjoy Your Music,Kenny.

For me it would be the EPI 100's.
I lucked out as an ignorant young rocker and purchased a pair of these from Pauls TV in Sarnia as my first serious speakers and mated them with a Realistic STA-90 and a Technics SL- something or other DD Semi-Automatic Turntable.
My friends and I (and I'm sure the neighbors) rocked out many a night with this system.
Added a Realistic Shure V-15 and an ADC Sound Shaper later to round it out.
Even Better !!
Those were the days ..... :smoke:

The ADS L-400 is a fantastic sounding bookshelf speaker in a very small package. They measure 7.5" x 11" x 6.5" and have 7" woofers and are in gorgeous wood cabinets. I also have a pair of AR7s and there is no comparison sound wise. The JBL 166s are better but you could have 10 pair of these little ADS speakers in the space of the JBLs.

A GREAT Speaker, it has my vote!!! :thmbsp:
I agree that the L-166s are great speakers but they are quite big.

If speakers this size are considered "bookshelf" speakers, that opens the field to include some of the great midsize ADS speakers like the L-520, L-570s, L-880s and even the L-710s and L-810s. I have a pair of L-880s and they are sightly smaller than the JBL L-166s.

The Dynaco A-25's get my vote for 70's and the AR3a, but it's a lot easier to find A-25's in good working condition.
