The original Preludes were a design from the 70s though there was a later iteration called the 2/2.
They're bigger than the standard minimonitor and do more bass. They're front ported two ways with a relatively large woofer for the size cabinet they're in.
Give them some time for them to get used to your gear and you to get used to them before fully assessing their performance.
Like most Spendors, their quality sneaks up on you.

Erik follows with a post describing the classics as warmer/softer. I would agree with that.
The A Series brings a little more detail in mids and highs. Vocals are alive but not "shouty", percussion is realistic. The newer Spendors just take reproduction of timbre, which they have done well all along, to a slightly higher level.
Very, very pleasing and satisfying speakers.
I look up at the clock sometimes and realize I've been listening non-stop for two hours. Something that never happened with any other speaker I've owned.

Things are good Bigerik.
My Spendor A9s are on vacation, spending some time at AK'er Steph_Gaynor's house while the living room gets a makeover.
So while the speakers have a vacation, I have homework on weekends. Nearing the end now . . . the speakers have been there for about six weeks. This is a big room and I have less energy weeknights than I once did, especially as the light fades early this time of year.
Within two weeks, they should be coming home from vacation.

Darker is a relative term davidro.
If you've just been splashed with sound at a showroom, Spendors are going to sound kind of dark and classic Spendors are going to sound somewhat darker than tower Spendors.
Your ears adjust to sound similar to the way your eyes adjust to light.
One person's dark is another person's twilight, is another person's favorite type of light.
Subjectively, in terms of presentation, I'd say I found the towers a bit forward and they required an adjustment on my part to what they present compared to what my classic Spendor's have presented.
With all that said, I'll take the towers. They do everything the other speakers did well, including the BC1's quality midrange, and add to it without being overwhelming.
Compare those new-to-you Rogers to other speakers you've used and consider that the Spendors provide some of the same magic that Jim Rogers produced voicing those speakers.

Interesting how you guys seem to take issue with the descriptor dark. To me it means good. I'd much rather have dark sounding speakers over bright sounding. Ok there's neutral sounding but who is to define neutral
"Dark" is the last word I'd use to describe my Sp1s. They're pretty zingy. Maybe it's the room.

Looks like they've changed the woofer and tweeter so I'm curious how the sound has changed. The old SA1 just lacked that last ounce of transparency and bass extension but was still a highly enjoyable speaker to listen to, I think its prettier than the new D1 though. I'll be looking out for reviews and particularly interested if they are able to make comparisons with the SA1, thanks for the heads up.
Price wise they seem to be veering onto territory that'll buy you a lot of nice competitors offerings and with the dedicated stands approaching the price of their own A6R.

Impressed by the great reviews and their looks, I am investigating the Spendor D7s. Would appreciate any feedback from those of you who own them or have heard them properly. Am especially interested in how they compare with the two speakers I know best : the KEF r500s and PMC twenty 23s. thanks.

I have the Spendor A6R and love them. If I had the coin I would have the D7's. No audition, just straight up purchase. Folks who I know and who really like the A6R say that the D7 is markedly better. The A6R just bettered the PMC 23's in a group test in What HiFi, FWIW.
