Hello Steve,

I recognize that Fluid Dampener anywhere! :D

How is the restored Sansui 8 Deluxe treating you?

Cheers, Bob

Here's a couple of my daily drivers. TD-160 Super with a SME 3009 and a TD-147 with a TP-16 MK III. And I have a few more Thorens waiting to be refurbished. :thmbsp:

Piano glass plinth

I thought I would waste some time well today. I,ve removed the TD160 B TT from its original not very substantial MDF plinth. I,ve rubbed it down with very fine sandpaper. I just gave it a first coat of undercoat with a paint roller. I am planning on 3 coats of undercoat before aiming for a black piano gloss finish. Has anyone tried this ? Any tips for super gloss finish ?

I am restoring this one onl as a temporary measure till I finalise my plans for a hand made solid oak plinth

Glad this group is started. Is there any way that any old Thorens related postings from other groups on here can be copied into this group, so that all Thorens info can be browsed all together here ?

Interesting? Did you make that cork mat yourself? How do you like it versus just one solid piece of cork with no cork dots?

No I didn't make these. They were bought off ebay. To be honest I can't hear a difference. But my ears aren't what they used to be. Being that the album floats on the mat you would think there would be less noise coming from the platter. :scratch2:

Lovely 160 Super bob! I wish I could get mine to look that shiny. Any tips?

Hey Bob,

I'm in love with the Sansui 8 Deluxe sound.:music: The mono switch on it comes in handy, my mono records sound way better. The Thorens sounds amazing through the Sansui.

Yep, wouldn't be without the fluid damper on the SME. The arm sounds WAY better. Everyone should have it, you don't know what your missing.:D

Alright! I'm surprised no one ever thought to start a Thorens club. Count me in.

My 160 with a custom padauk plinth, an SME 3009 Imp Fixed Headshell, SAE1000E cartridge, VN Acrylic Outer Platter, and a couple of internal mods. Getting a Mose Hercules PSU at some point soon.

White Thorens TD160 plinth

I am in the oricess of re paintin my Thorens TD160 plinth

I have sanded it lightly and now given it two coats of white undercoat which I had lying around. I am planning on trying to get a piano gloss black finish on it.

Looking at it white, it looks pretty great. I do have some vague recollection that when I was selling these in the early 70,s Thorens released a special edition of this in white. Anyone have any memories of this or am I delusional ? (quite likely !)

Never seen a original white one. Seen repainted ones white.

Regarding platter polishing, I got great results on my oxidized TD-145 mkII platter by using Nevr-Dull. I think Divotdog turned me on to the stuff. Takes some elbow grease but it's worth it. I haven't re-polished in about two years and it's still looking pretty good.
