On the surface, for popularity and performance combined i'd have to say:

Sui BA-5000/3000
Pioneer Spec 2/4

But, my soul wants to vote for the overlooked underdogs:

Dynaco 400/410
Technics SE-A1/SE-A3(maybe not so overlooked, just rare)
Bose 1800(pro) 1801(home)
........... and that beast that Heathkit offered thru the mid 70's too!

Always loved the sound of my dads Pioneer SA-7100 but not comparable to list above. My cousin also has a 1000 watt HK amp(Pro) Its sounds sweet too.

These informal polls should require that anything (same unit or same company) currently in the system can NOT be voted on. Since there is a request for three then there is room to put in three amps you think are great vintage and leave out what you personally own. This takes a bit of bias out of these polls. Have fun.

Luxman, Krell, Maark Levinson, oh but I own some luxman, so put McIntosh in there. I sold it recently.

So we have to pick stuff we like, bud not from brands we like well enough to own? What value will the data be then, even from this informal poll?

There was a Dynaco 400 at the Thrift this week. One bad channel, and a small dent in the front made me pass. Maybe some other time.

marantz model 140 just recently sold mine- but the new owner is a fan of marantz.

the pioneer spec amps.

I owned a Marantz 8b, Pair of model 2s, Dyna mk3s, and st70s. None of em could hold a candle to the Dyna ST 410 I replaced em with. Of the tube gear I liked the Dyna mk3s the best. Sounded the most like a powerful and clean amp and had little sound of it's own.

I will only list amps that I owned and used for a length of time:

McIntosh MC-2300 -"In a class by its self"
Dynaco ST-400 - "My first big power amp, wish I still owned it"
Dynaco Stereo 70- "My first power amp, great sound but lacking if power"
Dynaco Stereo 120 -"Built as a kit gave me many years of use and sounded better than any of the recievers of that time period IMO"
