Most truck buyers here in the states would buy a functional truck like that if it were available, but sadly it is not.

I'm not so sure about that. I think that most truck buyers prefer high beds where you don't have to tie everything you're hauling down. Yes, it's sometimes a PITA to reach over the bed sides for something, but that's kind of what utility trailers are used for. I wish all pickups had a RamBox type option and collapsable bed steps. They're great solutions for us shorter guys.

Truck buyers can't buy what is unavailable, and traveling public roadways with an unsecured load in the bed of your truck is unacceptable.

Toyota is Lexus, so here's my LX450. I really wanted an FZJ80 pre 1994 but found an ultra-clean Lexus version driven by stay at home mom. I replaced the suspension with the ARB heavy package etc. Took off the badges and got some TEQ replacements.

Returning from a service call earlier this afternoon I spotted a T100 parked in a homeowners front yard, it looked familiar so I pulled in their driveway to have a look. As I suspected, it's my old '96 SR5 4WD V6 truck that I sold 20 years ago! The man that bought it passed a few years ago, but his wife continues to enjoy driving it weekly. It's held up pretty well and has about 350,000 miles on it. This was the very first pickup that I ever bought.

When I was growing up, our good friend and neighbor had one of these. Late '80s one ton long bed Toyota pickup. Big truck in a small package. Nice low bed height, and he had a roof rack on it. Honestly, the roof rack wasn't that much higher than the beds on modern trucks. I'm sure these are pretty rare nowadays.

My parents first Toyota was a '74 Corolla with Celica GT wheels sway bars and some other bolt on parts that made it look a little better. When it was totaled they bought a '79 Corolla wagon that I swapped as much as I could from the '74 on it but still hated driving it as a teenager (and bought my first car as soon as I could). About 1980 I bought a '74 Celica GT and put a ton of miles on it, A year or so later I built a FJ40 with a 307 (that was eventually replaced with a 400hp 350 with nitrous). In '83 I bought a '81 4wd pickup and installed a Buick V6. In about 2000 I bought an '81 Corolla Wagon and couldn't have been happier with it, even though it was basically the same car I hated driving 20 years earlier. I still have the "81 pickup and have put several hundred thousand miles on it (along with several Buick motors).

I had an '81 pickup as well. I'm a small guy but I'm glad that interior wasn't smaller than it was. It was a tight fit for two guys.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Seriously, it probably requires the additional wiring from the seat to the module and perhaps a different module.
If it were mine, I'd leave it.
Theoretically it's possible, but realistically you'll have 30 to 50 hours in it once you track down the parts you'll need and tear down your entire interior and possibly remove the dash to install the harness.
Dashes very rarely go back together perfect and you usually end up with a rattle or an extra screw or a mode door thar doesn't work.
Did I mention I'd probably not attempt this "upgrade"

No ABS
Drum brakes all around
Heck I don't think it even has any solid state electronics besides a few diodes in the rectifier...
Not once did I feel unsafe due to the total lack of safety equipment.

I was mainly a hardcore Mopar guy for years but became disillusioned with them as they evolved into the late '90's/2000's. Owned a few Fords and AMCs/Jeeps over the years as well. Never cared for anything GM.
Last thing we owned before going Toyota was a 2000 Suzuki Grand Vitara. I liked it quite well but it got wrecked
Our first Toyota was a 2000 Echo, great little car.
Second was an '04 Camry, great car. Rust killed it at 450,000 KMs.
Third is another '04 Camry. Just under 300,000 KMs now but is also getting rusty underneath, will get another year out of it I hope. Works great, have done nothing to it but brakes and exhaust in the past 6 years.
Fourth is an '04 Highlander that is my beater truck. Rough around the edges, dings and dents etc. but with very little rust. Came from Saskatchewan 5 years ago, coming up to 400,000 KMs. Works very good and again, very few repairs have been required.
Probably in another year or so we'll drop down to just one vehicle, pretty sure it will be a newer Highlander or Rav 4.
I've been very happy with Toyota, this retired mechanic likes not having to work on our rides very often.

Same vehicle and same year should not be a problem.
I wouldn't expect the airbags to work but if it mechanically fits I'd just short out the airbag wires and go with it.
