Treasure or trash MC240

Also, how well are the transformer labels put on? Can I run a single edge razor under them to remove? Will heat help? I want to repaint them.

I didn't have a lot of luck removing labels from a few MC-30 transformers. Sometimes, they'll pop right off with a little persuasion from a razor blade and other times they want to stick hard to the paint/metal. If you get them off, the black paint is still stuck to the back of the label. Heat might help release the glue but you'd have to be careful not to melt the label art work. Terry has likely done this many times so maybe he'll drop by.

Of course, you'll almost for sure need to replace the voltage doubler caps (looks like JJ has one that will work), filter caps (looks like the CE 80/40/30/20 might work) and the bias cap, C27.

Contact me for an Excel spreadsheet of parts - appears AK doesn't allow uploads of .xls files to threads.

It should help but I'd suggest you double-check the values against your amp first before buying against this list - just to be sure.

Cheers,

David

Not look like a mud dauber nest. It is a mud dauber nest. Like I said, it was in an outdoor shed for many years...Just have to determine if I want to paint the chassis, have it rechromed or buy a replacement.
Lol! Wasp nest on the board is a good one. :) Love to have a project like that -- I'd look into getting the chassis replated, and enjoy it for years to come. Good rescue. :thmbsp:

Hi,
I can tell if they are scratched down to bare metal or just super dirty. If super dirty you may want to try my new favorite product Flitz on them. It is like a super fine rubbing compound, I did up my MC30's trannies with it and they came out very nice. I was concerned about replacing the stickers as well, as it turns out there was no need..
Hope its not to late, good luck with your endeavor awesome find..

ps i think i may have a aftermarket chassis lead if your interested. I am not for sure but might be worth checking

Fritz is good stuff. I also use Happisch Simichrome and 3M Perfrect-It polishes with great results. It can even be used when sanding out deeper scratches with some 1000 grit and then repolishing.

I'll let you know on the chassis.

A quick cleaning and it looks a lot better already.

Can you tell me which specific product you used for this? I'd like to get some...

Thanks.

Sorry for the late response, but just in case you still want to know, I used TechSpray flux remover. Mainly because it was what I had on the bench. They make a parts cleaner that would work too.

Project MC240 Update

I decided to do what I can with what I have and get the amp up and going. I may, at a later date, do a full blown rebuild and replace the chassis, but for now...bead blasting.

Primer done...so what color do you think I should paint the chassis? Satin black, silver, burgundy, something else?

how much did you pay for this (if you paid at all)? and what's your budget to get it up and running? i can't believe the progress you've made in just a month and a half.

i suggest some unconventional colors since this is the amp's rebirth! burgundy is a great suggestion!

I'm leaning toward semi-gloss black chassis and base. Then do the transformers in an automotive dark red/burgundy. The chassis is pitted from the rust and a gloss paint on the chassis would show that.
