Unassembled & unopened Cit I and Cit II kits!

I wonder if there's math in buying the kits and selling the parts piecemeal for profit?

Oh the sacrilege! Lol.

Wouldn't be worth it because you can even do the same with a Cit II that is boarderline. In fact one fairly decent Cit II just sold for around 800 bucks with the cage and what looks like GEC KT88s inside:

IMHO the only reason it didn't sell for more is that the guy didn't take the time to clean it up a bit and take some better pictures. If the GECs would have been clearly visible it would have gone for at least a couple hundred more.

These unbuilt kits are likely to top $2000 each., If this was before xmas I wouldn't have been surprised if they would have fetched over $3000 each. I predict that they will both go for around $2500 each because things have slowed on eBay since the new year.

Now if you were to buy them you could sell the NOS tubes and recover a fair amount but as parts they wouldn't be worth much more than the $800 one would be worth in parts. Not worth it math wise, as well as the fact that you would incur bad karma retribution from the audio demons for the rest of your earthly existence.:D

Well, apparently jay would be in line for the iron. :D
Letsee on the Cit1

Iron Maybe $200
Faceplate maybe $120
Tubes maybe $600
Pots maybe $100
Somebody would be hot for the caps at maybe $100
Whats left maybe another $150

Nope. I'll bet it goes for better than $1200

Cit2

Iron Maybe $750
Tubes Maybe $900 if theyre the goodies.
Caps and other stuff +/- $200

Nope. I'll bet it goes for $1500-$2500

Dont forget shipping. Fully insured 2 day is gonna be $80 or better.

OMFG! Where do these come from?

I'm not sure if this is the same seller but there was a wack of Eico kits that came up on the bay about a month ago and the seller said he had more unassembled kits of the same vintage to sell. Apparently someone squirreled away an assortment of these kits, some of the Eicos he sold were assembled but still in the original kit boxes. Would be interesting to know the story behind the person who had these all stashed away.

Too bad it was this eBay reseller guy that came across the stash and not one of us. Now that would have been the audio find of the century! Maybe the millennium.

That much you think? Hhmmm. :scratch2:

Interesting for sure. Now could be the time. Economy down. right after Christmas........
Im thinking the opposite. The bidders right now are just dreamers for sure. Dreamer money runs out quick. I'll bet theres at least one that bid already that couldnt pay even if they did win.

Playin auction Poker is fun.

Too high on the I, too low on the Deuce's iron. The old electrolytics are worthless, the paper 160P Spragues are marginal although they may have some value to a fanatic collector.

If I won those I"d build them with modern parts if I wanted to listen to them. If they were "shelf queens" (collector items) I'd use all the original stuff.

People tend to want to listen to H-K gear, not much of it is display only stuff.

I'll bet the II goes for $3K plus.

Guys, if you want to include eBay links in this thread, just let us know and one of the mods can move it to Dollars & Sense. Not a problem at all.

If you'd rather it stayed in Tube Audio, feel free to copy & paste the pics from any eBay auction that you wish. That's ok too.

I would also give more value to the cases and faceplates. It would be sweet to have one of these look as if it were just out of the showroom.

I'd like best to find one of these with a totally thrashed, perhaps water-damaged, falling-into-pieces box, but otherwise pristine, never-assembled, etc... insides. That way, I wouldn't agonize over the question of preserving the "collectible premium" that a completely untouched NIB kit has. I could dig in and assemble the thing (with modern caps).

Otherwise, I'd go nuts staring at it, wanting to build it, but wanting to keep it, but wanting to build it, yet wanting to keep it... ARGH! At least with sealed LPs, it usually isn't hard to find an opened copy to listen to... not quite so easy to pick up another Cit I/II for listening, just to keep these on the shelf.

It will be interesting to see what these go for.

I've seen a few Cit IIs for sale that tempted me, but they were real "projects", in fairly poor shape. One Cit I was out of my budget at the time, and another sold before I saw it. So far the only Citation I've actually got, is the Citation Receiver, which doesn't even have tubes! :sigh: ...but I'm still happy to have at least that; as receivers go, it's a beauty! :D

So is anyone here actually bidding on those two NIB units, or are we all too poor (or too stingy)?

This is exactly why I buy used cars that are out of warranty and already dented. It drives me crazy to watch something nice and new I own get damaged.

Well I've been a seller on ebay since ebay pretty much began (god has it really been 13 years lol?). Anyhow, I had no idea about the above link. I wonder if it's accurate?

I've never heard of it either, but I compared it to one of my own listings, and it had the correct watch count. I wonder how it works?

Lol!

I can just picture a special room set up at the next AK Fest just for viewing these two Citations, in the boxes. Everyone who took a look would be thinking the same thing as you, lol.

Would be a dilemma for sure.

What some enterprising person should do is buy at least the Citation II and then ship it off to China to be reverse engineered. Not! :D Actually send a beat up one that works. Then put out a line of Cit II clone kits. Wonder how much it would cost? Wonder how much you would have to sell them for to make money? They sold the original kit for around 300 bucks back in the sixties, so in today dollars and economy? Mmmmmm?

Have been thinking about what I said in the first post:

"Maybe I can trade a kidney."

It was of course said tongue in cheek. Weird thing is though that I have had it cross my mind in the last couple days if I would actually do a trade for one of my kidneys for both the Cit I and II kits :scratch2:. This hobby is dangerous!!!!, and I'm not talking about the voltages! :D

I ended up with a pair of McIntosh MC30s, consecutively serial numbered and very clean (and I do mean PERFECT trannies - just perfect) - even the inner metal was pristine, no heat colorations, except......

....for a smidge of a squirt of electrolytic gel that apparently was shot onto the inner metal from being powered on after a long period of dormancy. Then the amps were apparently recapped with modern mylar and/or poly caps by a more knowledgeable sort - operational, and just the perfect "source units" to have rebuilt THE RIGHT WAY, without having ANY guilt about redoing them. The "redo" had already been started, so I could proceed with ZERO hesitancy about altering them. And the amps were more modestly priced, as the collectors had been chased away.

They were given a proper rebuild with the full intent of being heard. Amps like this should be if reasonable or possible. Now if they had been presented to me in original box like these Citation kits, that decision would have been MUCH more difficult if not impossible, because it is very much proper to keep something THAT perfect in the original state. I wouldn't even want to breathe on these.
