Veneering A7s

RIP 1961-2018
Has anyone here ever veneered a pair of Altec 7 VOTTs? I'm thinking it might help the WAF just enough to get them in the house. I suppose you would want the grain vertical on the horn mouth eh?:scratch2:

well

May I ask just what does WAF mean ? I have been on this board a short time and have seen it a few times here and do not know all the terms yet.

LOL... Well.. I didn't get my Altec's veneered yet, but I did get my Peavey's done... They are a little smaller, but still really big.. LOTS of time in prep work, and a hell of a lot of wood and glue are needed.

Mine got moved into the basement because I decided I liked the sound of my JBLs better for a main system, and even though my wife would still be living with the in the living room if I wanted, I knew it would make her happier if they were moved...

I'd really like to get mine done, but I just don't have the time. I've got some beautiful cherry sheets (raw, not backed) I am plannin on doing them with some day..

OH.. but even if they look spectacular, I don't think that would help a while lot.... The sheer size seems to be more the turn off for the ladies... go figure.. .

If you get a really nice veneer, you can polish those cabs a LOT.. you can easily make them look furniture grade so long as you do really good prep work. You can also build cases for the horns and make those look great, then use trim and build some nice feet and add molding to the top and bottoms of the cabs..

Looking at the 828 cabinet it is nearly 42 x 30 inches, add the horn enclosure and it would probably add another 15 - 18 inches of height. A grill based on 1/4 inch plywood with a narrow molding would make it look prettier but it is still the elephant in the room.

Yeah.. it is funny.. I had mine in the living room for a long time, and finally wanted to move them out and get a little space back, but I also wish I could get them in a really big space to listen to them.. and here others are trying to do all they can to get them in the house... :D

If you're willing to put the horn inside and are able to make them look like WardsWeb's Magnificents I think you would be 1/2 way there.

+1 on this. In a home environment, this actually may sound better, too... the horn will be down closer to ear-level when sitting.

Regards,
Gordon.

I had a cabinetmaker make me a pair of 825s from high quality birch plywood which took a nice finish. The builder had the idea for the contrasting trim which hid the plies and also gave the cabinets a nice look. I had 515Bs in them.

But I used them in the basement not the frontroom. And to tell the truth the 19s I had later sounded better anyway and in the bass too. I used subs with the 825s, big ones, and 825s sure are big boxes to need subs; one may as well use a smaller and easier to build box if one's going to use subs anyway.

But the 825 is a seriously cool looking cabinet; that's worth something.

Hi Jay ,

A new hardwood floor in the the living room would increase the WAF a lot more than the veneer ,just buy enough to clad the A7's so they blend into the room .
