Yep, we all knew that once AOL starting dumping their folks onto the internet, it wouldn't go well ...
Kinda like watching kids with eBikes and scooters blasting around in traffic with no helmets, no license, and no idea of the rules of the road.
Bad stuff is bound to happen.

Not at all. There was plenty of explanation as to the WHY of this happening in the previous 2 pages.
AK is not a high end revenue site with well paid IT team handling all of this ...
Ms Grumpy can't be everywhere and in all things on the site - eventually she needs some time for herself -
and sometimes things just slip.

I wasn't referring to Mrs. Grumpy at all. Loved reading her comment that she is contacting Advally to rectify the situation. That is really all I needed to know about the problems with ads for the moment, looking forward to seeing it fixed soon.

There are some basic risks to surfing the web, now more than before with all the AI bots scanning everything and looking for opportunities to monetize their collected data.
To say nothing about non-American actors looking to get one over on us - however they can.

And folks complaining that they have to spend money to upgrade their 10 year old computers because they have access problems if they don't.
I f you aren't a subscriber you aren't helping pay to keep the site up to date.
Not trying to pick on anyone - but we get these emails and complaints all the time.

I appreciate its tough to fund updates to computer IT gear (Computers, tablets, phones, etc). I retired 4 years ago and appreciate being on a fixed income now -
its why most of my audio gear was bought 8-10 years ago - and we mostly drive old cars (2000 and 2012 Honda).
I'm lucky I had my web design career from 95 -17 and retired in 2022 ... Heck, AI does all that base coding stuff now!

A lot of older PCs could be updated to W11 at basically no cost with easy workaround for installing on older hardware. Yet, many seem reluctant to do it for whatever reason. Their choice, of course, but not sure why.

And, sure W11 in itself isn't a solution to some things but it sure can extend out some types of compatibility stuff, security updates, etc.

Several 4th gen i5 with workaround to W11. They seem to work just as well, maybe better, than they did on previous OS. But, for me they're one of two things; running as dedicated NVR for IP cam systems, or just general purpose computing. No heavy gaming or stuff like that.

I have two computers. One is more modern and the other is 15 years old (at least the motherboard and CPU). I have no issues with getting on any site on the internet. I also use Fedora Linux and not WindBlows... I think sometimes it is an easy excuse to blame the hardware of the end user and not the server. All the recent problems that I experienced here were with the server. I had a workaround but apparently the problems got fixed on the server side so it is all good now.

I don't do ads...

I watched one of any number of the YouTube videos that shows how, for anyone that might be interested. It's not, IMO, something you have know through detailed knowlege like manually editing the registry or stuff like that.

This is not true. a .org designation does not require being a non-profit. If Audiokarma were a non-profit it would have a board of directors and be required to make it's financials public. It would also mean donating to Audiokarma would be tax deductible. None of that to my knowledge (and I did some homework) is true. Audiokarma is a for profit entity. Ha, that doesn't mean it makes a ton of profit, but that is how it is structured the best I can tell.

Ok 2ndserve, I didn`t research it, as I stated it was my understanding having been told some yrs. back.

The way I have my "all" of the available Win 11 OS` and EDGE browser privacy settings setup maxed out, also with the use of InPrivate browser extension, I never see any ads on A/K other than the vender banner in the upper right hand corner of the page, which suits me fine, or I wouldn`t be on this/any site, as I absolutely can`t stand all advertisements, no matter their type/source, so my initial presence on this thread was curiosity of what was bothering folks who were posting.

It's hard to imagine a real business model for a forum. Millions of ads, or charge money to participate -- that about covers it. If you charge to be a member, membership falls, but profitability improves. If membership falls too much, the value of the service falls, and people won't be willing to pay.

I do homework on stuff, it's just how I'm wired. After seeing Mrs. Grumpy state she is looking into the issue with advally, I did the smallest amount of looking into advally. Two reviews on Trustpilot - both one star for lack of payment. One of those downgraded from five stars years ago, that is, if true, the more disturbing of the two. Two reviews isn't data but it isn't exactly reassuring to see either. Reddit thread doesn't look good either. Hate to see AK end up on the wrong side of the stick on this.

So it does not really matter what vendor's they use or how they are rated. It does not matter if its profitable or not. It does not matter if the staff is paid or not.

The only thing that matters IMHO is if you are willing to support said forum or not. That means either pony up the 25 bucks a year or live with how things are run.

I like this place enough that some those things do matter to me for my experience, for the experience of others and for the benefit of AK overall.

I use my phone mostly for browsing here, I'm pretty sure if you use Brave browser you get no ads! Btw it also works for watching YouTube... Until things get sorted it's a way thru.
I have no affiliation with that browser but it is supposed to be more secure with our data as well.
