Virus attack after log in

Ditto here. Just came in to check status fom my laptop, and when I went to reply to this thread was immediately hi with the xp antivirus crap. Combofixing it now. Like mr. Wigwam, im only going to use non windows devices until this is fixed. Can't run vmware as my windows media is buried in storage, and its so rainy I can't pull anything out to look. Too bad I have to take porn site measures with AK. Good luck to those working on this!

A question about VM Ware. I downloaded it and went to install it and it says it needs an operating system. Do I just use my XP disc? Or make a boot disc (can you even make one with XP?)?

ETA: My XP disc is just a single license, when I swapped hard drives a while back I had to call Microsoft and recite a huge key code to allow me to use it on a different HDD. I'm not going to have to go through all that with VMWare, am I?

VMware Player runs within Windows as a program, it's not in place of Windows, if that's what you mean.

But, yes, if you want to run XP within VMware Player, all the normal licensing stuff applies. It's pretty much just like running it on a separate machine inside another.

Yeah, got that part. I run it at work with a few different machines on it, but have never installed it myself. But it wasn't clear what it meant by "needs an operating system". I was hoping it'd piggyback on the XP install in the main rig.

All you need to do to stop it is run an anti script program. Anyone who is surfing AK without one after this advice was giving out last week or so is playing with fire. If you stop the Google syndication scripts, you stop the virus.

i cant see why the advert where the problem is coming from cant be removed by whoever does the i.t work for ak . or maybe set up as a secure server not sure what's involved with that though ? . i tried https and it didn't work

Not correct. I'm an IT professional, it walked through my defenses like a hot knife through butter. All were defeated.

In a sense, VMWare is Linux. There are lots of kinds of VMWare. The professional version is a basic Linux kernel that in turn hosts other operating systems. Other versions I don't know; but there's still some Linux type kernel in there, I think...dunno. I'm not that big a fan of the free version of VMWare. I prefer Virtualbox. But my netbrick won't host other OS's in any case; too small. And even if I could, running a throw-away virtual OS just to surf the web? Not happening.

Yep. NoScript has worked for me. The AK admin staff is diligently working on the problem. We aren't alone...there are thousands of vBulletin boards having the same troubles.

Update your Java, browsers, anti-virus, malware programs and keep them updated...and find a bit of patience, too.

Oh, gotcha now. There are links to many different premade VM appliances through VMware website or you can pretty much just install anything you can (legally) get your hands on.

Yeah, it's cool and all, but not happening here. My home PC is running Mint natively; don't need no stinking Windows on it and it doesn't get viruses. But my new netbrick was a Christmas gift from Mrs. Wiggy and I wanted Windows on it because I need Windows to run iTunes (doesn't run right on virtual OS's) and my copy of WT3 to test woofers, which also doesn't run on anything but Windows.

And in any case, I should not have to jump through hoops and run OS within OS just to surf the freaking web. That's nonsense, and I won't do it.

I'm no computer expert but this is what I think also. As far as turning off this or that I don't see why we should have to do that to view the site. My subscription expires today and I'm not renewing until this is straightened out. My Norton has blocked so many attacks I've lost count and I'm not looking at the site as much as I was for fear of a virus. The administration need to get really serious about this.

yep i don't get any problems as i run linux ubuntu .i feel for the ones running windows .its a brilliant site and needs sorting .i don't know about i.t too much but my friend who looks after my websites does do . next time i speak to him i will ask for advice and forward it to to the admins ..he is very busy though doing seo work for many people ..

Having read through this thread on my Droid, I've decided to upgrade FireFox to the latest version (was 8.0) and see what happens. I've been able to remove the ill effects using combofix for each previous infection. If that doesn't work i'll go the VMware route running Linux. So far that option has had a higher PIA than fixing.

Let's see how it goes. At least this time I got much further than my last attempt.

It's worked for me. With an outdated Avast AV program and nothing special for a firewall. I haven't had a single hit or hint of a hit. I did finally update Avast today.
