im scared of heights really bad.
i couldent do it as a career,, but maybe if sombody offered me a million dollars i could get to the top.

three hundred feet during tower crane erection and jacking is the most i ever did. seems that past about ninety feet it all becomes relative, but damn what a tiring climb and descent this guy had. nice vid thanks

I work for the FAA, and climbing towers is part of my job. Most I have ever made it is about 100ft, and that is high enough for me. We have to wear/use a full body harness, and we do not freeclimb. We have to be hooked on at all times. There is no way I would ever freeclimb anything.....those guys are nuts...

BTW I am deathly afraid of heights......but I enjoy my paycheck....

Nextel put a free-standing 200' cell tower on my property in 1993. After it was completed, one Sunday afternoon (when OSHA wasn't around) the erectors winched my fat @$$ to the top using a capstan winch, a 500' double braid 3/4" dia. rope (to a pulley on top and back down), and a lap belt.

Scary as hell, but I had to do it, you know? No way would I ever get on a 1700' tower!!

Me, I would be afraid of one of those welded climbing grips of breaking off. You have to have a lot of trust in the health of that structure.

I'm glad that there are guys willing to do that and one of them wouldn't be me. That free climbing is nuts.

Yeah, it started to work on my stomach watching it. What if just one of those pegs started to bend or even break altogether. Would a parachute work at that height or would it just be in the way? :scratch2:

I once worked on a contruction site on top of a hill and the safety inspectors would sit in parking lots several blocks away to scope us out. I wouldn't discount their sneakiness.

you got that right. many violations and inspections are a result of this type of surveillance, a good thing really

Heck the guy took an elevator most of the ways up and he was using a safety line at times. A piece of cake.

I've "free climbed" all the way up Royal Arches (1400 feet) in Yosemite.

You want intense... how about "free soloing?" Just you and the rock and a lot of air.
