I wouldn't climb that tower for all the tea in China, but I've always wanted to go up in the old WBIR tower down in Blaine, near Knoxville...It has a man-elevator-So I've been told, anyhow- that goes up INSIDE the triangular structure...It was the tallest structure in the world for a time in the early-mid '60s. Be fun to hook up one of my Boatanchors to it...Bet I could pick up AM radio from Jupiter or Saturn w/it...Maybe even Uranus...Mbwahahahahahaha..

Sumpin' like that...I got snookered on some especially good tastin' shine once, I truly believed that I'd fall off the side of the world if I'd have let go of the grass, the world was spinnin' so fast...We had a big-azz bonfire goin', I spit a mouthful of it on the fire, it flared up & I was afraid I'd somehow conjured up ol' Beezlebub hisself...(grin)

What makes that so funny is we've all known that feeling at one time or another.
BTW what makes free climbing so addictive is the total concentration required. You only think about the next action required not how high you are or anything else. And it's that "forcing" of concentration that makes you feel so alive. Least that's my take on it. Of course if that's too mundane theirs always Russian Roulette.

Very cool! I've climbed in the Tetons and experienced exposure of around 1000 ft. It gets your heart pumping. The tower climb looks more exposed due to the tower doesn't block the view of the heights.

Always thought it would be pretty interesting, and pretty well paying, to be one of those dudes that gets dropped off by helicopter to check out the high voltage power lines.
In either case, one wrong move could well be your last. At least with the high voltage power lines it's probably over in a flash. From 1700 ft I think you'd have around 10 seconds to think about how high your body is going to bounce.

very cool pics Steelman, they bring back some memories. A couple of years after i started working as a superintendent I found I missed the adrenaline of high work, and took a job as a connector on a Brown & Root traveling crew setting bridge girders, but nothing on the scale of the Narrows bridge. This was back when the harnesses were becoming prevalent, and those damned lanyards snagging the studs atop the girders damned near killed me a number times. I held a Local 5 card for a time, but gave it up. I loved my days doing this work, but no type of work better validates these sage words.."if you're gonna be stupid, ya gotta be tough". Thanks again for the pics

It really is...never the same thing, always a challenge. I can't imagine doing anything else. I worked in a bank as a teller for 2 years, worked in retail on and off for 20 years and even drove trains for the NYCTA for 9 years but nothing gives me greater sense of accomplishment than being an Ironworker.

I know what you mean about the harness...hung me up more times than I can count.
While working under the Marine Parkway Bridge, we were doing some repairs to the diagonal braces, the plank I was standing on walked while I was removing rivets to facilitate a repair and I went in the hole. If I was not tied off, I would have went for a swim! Hung there for 5 minutes until my partner threw me a tag line...
