What bourbon are you drinking today?

My wife has questioned my acquired bourbon tastes over the last 10 years. Every time I break open a bottle, she wants a sip, and the result is always the same "bad taste" face. I'm sure that you're familiar with that look. Anyway, today she came home with a 2-pack of Fireball Cinnamon Whisky shooter bottles. We both took a couple sips and I now know why Fireball is the number one seller in this area. Dirt cheap, overly sweet tasting, and only 66 proof. Perfect for the woman folk. No "bad taste" face from her on this one, but I got it bad when I took a sip. And my gut's been gurgling ever since. Damn cinnamon!

That all applies here... that schite is nasty!!! But l feel the sameway with any sweetened/flavored whiskey. I get it and understand why people like it but it's all nasty to me.

Kind of like coffee, if you put stuff in your coffee to be able to drink it then you don't like coffee.

Can't say you like whiskey if you need stuff in it.

I have a bottle of Eagle Rare unopened. I know it’s kind of silly, but I don’t want to open it because I can’t find it anymore. I also haven’t seen a bottle of Buffalo Trace on the shelf for a couple years. If someone in Minnesota knows who has some on the shelf I won’t tell anyone, if you let the cat out of the bag…

However, about six months ago, I was with a friend at a bourbon bar, and I had Elmer T Lee, and then I had an Eagle Rare. That was a mistake because according to my pallet, Eagle Rare isn’t even close and Buffalo trace trails Eagle Rare. But let me restate, this is all according to my pallet. Your pallet may vary.

Buffalo trace is no longer allocated so it’s readily available in Texas (Houston).

The liquor store wanted $200 for a bottle of Eagle Rare. Obviously I passed

For all practical purposes if it weren't for W.L.Weller (the man and his bourbon) there would be no Pappy Van Winkle...Pappy was a partner in the Stitzel Weller Distillery which opened on Kentucky Derby Day in 1935....Weller was the original wheated bourbon made at Stitzel Weller along with another wheated bourbon, Old Fitzgerald, but not of the same mash bill...they also made Rebel Yell and Cabin Still...there was never any Van Winkle labelled bourbon bottled/sold during Pappy's lifetime...Old Rip Van Winkle was sold under Julian Jrs reign while the 12, 15, 20, 23, and rye didn't appear until Julian III took over about 2001.

Weller and Van Winkle bourbons share the exact same mash bill, 70 corn, 16 wheat, and 14 malted barley...although they would be very subtle to most, the difference would come from either the bottling proof, age, or aging location in the rick house.or some combination of those factors.

For me Weller 12 year fits my preferences but I could certainly live comfortably with any Weller or Pappy bottling.

I made a trip to Total Wines to stock up on some items and saw a new bourbon on display and decided to try it out.

Wolcott, distilled by Barton 1792 (which I have tried) - mid tier priced at $30.


I am no bourbon expert, more of a single malt Scotch drinker, but dabbling more with bourbons. I liked it - a tad hot at first with a whiff of alcohol on the nose, but mellows on the palate with vanilla, oak, and fruit (apricot?).

Anyone else try this?
