The 2xx and 4xx series amps were from a year or two before the Alpine takeover. They may well have had some input into the units, though. Alpine got the keys in 1984.

L215 made 1984-1987 and do not sound as good as a L80. but sure its all about taste i suppose.

4xx were made between '82-'85, 2x0 were made between '83-'85, while 2x5 were made between '84-'87
1984 is the year Luxman became part of Alpine, so all this amp series were made before Alpine really took over...

ok makes sense. however i have both a L215 and a L80 at home at the moment, and it would be very unfair to the l215 to put them up against eachother

I belive you They were in totally different price range... Also you can get 215 for 150 eur today on Ebay, while L80 series are 700 eur and up

I was checking in at Hans' site last night and it mentions that the R-2050 was built by Alpine and it was from the pre-Alpine year. Might have been a bit of crossover in those early 80s. Luxman is a brand with lots of winners and a few less spectacular units. Evaluate b4 you buy, I guess like lots of brands. Fortunately, Luxman has a high percentage of good gear.

The L85V would be a significant downgrade from your L220, performance wise. The 85 might be a cooler beast, though. None of Luxman's 70s offerings can compare to the early 80s duo-beta amplifiers. They are simply that good.

where is the L80 vs 400 series being discussed? they are double the power of a L80
they should probably be compared to the L100 and then they will run into some competition, believe me!

I drive my A-25's regularly with this simple receiver.

And honestly, it drives them as well (they're only rated for some 35-40 watts IIRC) as well as the R-115 and R-1120 do...

Eye candy and Ear candy....Yes...

It's all about the Sound Signature which you are going for as to my comments below.

With all the Lux gear I have/had....I did not go for the L200/400 stuff (and I am sure there are good sound models in the series) ...but to me are too sterile of sound in which other
brands(at the time) sounded like as compared with 70's Lush sound of Luxman. As other's have stated...You can see the built quality that Alpine injected in Luxman during that time.

The few Lux units that I still have that are Eye/Ear candy...Not so much for Eye candy for R-117 ( R-117 there Best 80's model).

Back to the Thread....$$'s is your limit....I would stay away from L5 (which I had) as to the Crazy placement of RCA jacks. It did
sound good though...But it devolved dropping sound as to Cold Solder joints and the Bottom RCA connecters

I believe duo-ß was explained as better controlled, increased negative feedback.

CohibaJoe is turning this into a Show Your Luxman Thread. We have one. I will add that the L3 also has those bottom connectors, straight to the board, better sound, worse longevity or the connections to the board. They weren't used for many units.

Well a little late to the game but since we're in the "show us your Luxman" thread, here are my two amps. I've considered adding a receiver but i don't listen to the radio so I'd rather just put the money into the amp itself. Kind of want either an L-430 or an L-116A to get a little more headroom.
