Who is running "Full Range"?

We can't talk about full range drivers without bringing up these legends:

I had Bose 901 ser II. Basically an equalizer with a bonus set of speakers thrown in!

Now using dayton ps-222-8 full range in an open baffle. Lovely sound, but it took a lot of tweaking to make them listenable at first; then ultimately very satisfying.

I have the Alpair 10.2 in Parts Express cabinets and think they are almost as good as the Seas W18s I have in another speaker system...but the highs are not quite up to the standard of a decent dome tweeter. I do think(hint) that with a little crossover work they might be a great substitute for the 5060 mid-bass in a Dahlquist DQ-10.

heh, just listened to a potpourri of holiday music on my ML TQWTs and they acquitted themselves just fine.

Radio Shack 40-1354 twincones and Dave Dlugos' phase plugs FTW.

i've listened to fullrange over the years at shows etc. one thing they do is very good vocal. mostly i agree with what has been said in this thread but i have never heard a fullrange that will give you the 'glint' of well recorded brass instruments, particularly trumpets. synth music also fails.

i just don't think your going to get convincing orchestral and jazz brass from a whizzer cone, and its no matter what you use for a phase plug!

i have heard this from fine electrostatics (well fullrange?) and from heils. a couple makes of aluminum dome tweeter do it well too. just my two cents

I say an Altec 418-8h II full range 15" guitar speaker in an 8 cu. ft. ported box with one or four piezo super tweeters hung inside of the cone. No crossovers needed, just lots of EQ. :) It should sound just like some 901's

Thanks MK, but I quoted the wrong post. I was thinking of Mhardy's speakers! Yours look great though, just don't have a pair if those drivers.

I don't know if by "synth music" you mean electronic music in general, but I've found this to be a strong point of fullrange drivers, assuming a good tonal balance of course, but that applies to any speaker. You seem to be taking issue with whizzer cones, some are good and some are bad, I'll give you that. :) Ever heard a good 8" fullrange without a whizzer?

A 10" whizzered fullrange in a Karlson is probably what did the best job at reproducing a couple of great sax tracks I have. Interesting how experiences vary.

Wow! How much does one of those weigh?
about 200lbs each

Four! You not only HAVE four 80s but are using two in each cab! Sweet! I guess there's nothing worth doing that ain't worth overdoing! (I mean that in the best sense).

That is just awesome.

Goodmans had cabinet plans for 2 Axiom 80's per box as well as 4 Axiom 80's per box. Now that would be overdoing it. I was intrigued with this holy grail fullranger for a while and one came up locally at a very good price. It took me another year and a half to accumulate the other 3 at decent prices. Not like the outrageous prices selling on Ebay.
Decided to build cabs base on the Thorsten Magnificat speaker but using two Axiom 80 and an Axiom 22mkii instead of the Axiom 201...very happy with the results. My 15" Tannoy sits idled most of the time.

Here's another picture of the Betsy full range single driver in the folding wing OB. I found some inexpensive piano hinges at Big Lots and they did a good job of sealing the back wave. I understand the original Betsy and Betsy K drivers used exotic banana fiber cones.

The Miniwatt SET ( tiny silver amp ) is shown driving the Betsy's.
