WiiM WiFi Streamer

Another device using the same architecture. Metal case and enclosed power supply to minimize wires. Probably uses TPA-3116 amp chip.

Arylic s10 came. Very fast.

Very good build quality, metal body, acrylic top. Remote has good grip, smooth upper side. Unbelievable reminds on Alientek D8 remote ( as from same factory . Or generic one). I am surprised how small it is. (smaller than my Audio Alchemy DAC) As now I am in some ZEN, minimalist phase, this is excellent for me

Tried today just for Tidal streaming. Connecting is easy and straight forward. One can command from tablet (phone) but remote is also useful. If press NEXT on remote, on phone is changed NowPlaying song.
Somehow receiving of Arylic coincidence with my finishing ECC88 tube preamp.
So today I has a lot of news.

For now I am very satisfied with my new toy:rockon:

That's something of a Frankenstein creation... I think I like it...
:rflmao:
Trafo is from old tube radio, supply stabilizer and preamp are brand new PCBs. Pot is DIY attenuation.
Prototype on wood board . Just to test design and project. Very dangerous for kids and cats .
If pass exam then boxing is on the line

@chicks since you have so much time on your hands now you may want to update LMS to 7.9.2 and try the material skin which is much better than the classic skin. I mostly use Orange Squeeze from my android phone though.

Also LMS 8.0 is supposed to look and function like Roon if you are interested.

LMS 7.9.2 with the material skin screenshots:

You have done a lot work in this thread letting people know how this unit works in the real world. Thanks.

Finally got the ancient NAS to update, by pointing apt to old archived repositories, so that the ancient SSL libs would install. Probably super insecure - need to replace the old POS.

Material interface refuses to install, probably since it won’t allow this old ssl protocol to connect. However, was able to manually install the Mobile skin. Pretty nice for phones.

Material Skin on my Android tablet has overtaken Orange Squeeze as my LMS controller of choice. Didn't know about it until I saw @ldatlof's post about it the other day, thanks for that!

Found instructions in the Slimdevices forums for downloading and installing the Material Skin manually. Works. Very nice, very usable now, compared to the ancient, ugly default LMS UI. Server Settings are a bit odd, but I'll see if something can be tweaked to fix. Unfortunately, I'll have to manually update it, but no biggie. Still looking at replacements for this NAS, perhaps even a Pi with an HDD, since I hate running something with an old, insecure, unfixable SSL.

A couple of issues:

The phone's hardware volume buttons don't control volume, obviously, as this is a browser UI. The iPeng app fixes this, and the browser UI is great on the ChromeBox.

While speakers can be grouped, they're often WAY out of sync, a big plus in favor of Sonos vs this, but one I can easily live with.

Still looking at replacements for this NAS

There are people who have built entirely new images for the WD NAS devices (certainly for MyCloud devices), based on a clean Debian build. It might be worth trawling the WD forums to see if someone has done the same for your older NAS. Assuming my recollection is correct, and you have a WD somethingBook...

There's a Synology build for MyCloud, too,,,

^^^^ Yeah, problem still is that the hardware is too old - Perl repositories no longer support PowerPC CPU that's in this old POS. Without the updated SSL, it also won't support SMB-3, which my ChromeBox requires, rightly, for proper security. Time to break down and get a proper NAS. Only question is:Synology or QNap... Anyway, this is all OT.

Not happy with a sub $100 device for your WiFi streamer? Can't possibly be any good, right? No problem, here's a DAC that uses exactly the same technology for a mere $2500. Lol. Audiophile credentials!

Multi-talented! The Pro iDSD can link directly link to a router for online music playback. With LINKPLAY WiFi/network playback, built-in Spotify and Tidal, and wide protocol support for 32-Bit/192kHz and DSD64, the Pro iDSD can be also used without a computer to stream audio.

After reading this thread , ordered one from amazon for $63 the other day .....
Curiosity got the better of me ....

I have a few rigs I’m gonna try it on ...

Yamaha wxc-50 feeding SIRIUSXM via coax - bypassing the yammys dac -into a Cambridge 851n ( used as a preamp and tidal hifi streaming ) into a PS Audio S300 feeding Salk Supercharged Song Towers .... the main rig ... want to compare it to the wxc50 feeding the 851n AND directly feeding the S300 .....

Also want to see how it sounds feeding a DAYENS Ampino integrated amp feeding bookshelf speakers - my main reason for buying....

Also directly feeding a Parasound A21 and Polk sda 1c’s .... which presently has a wxc-50 feeding the Parasound directly in preamp mode - which sounds pretty good btw .....

I’m also curious to see how it compares to the Yamaha when using the internal dacs in pre-amp mode for both , and when bypassing the internal dac and using as a transport only ...

It’ll be a few days , but I’ll update .....

Picked up a Raspberry Pi to use as the LMS server. MUCH better than the old NAS, quite a bit faster. There were still some missing modules, but plenty of online resources resolved it pretty quickly. Also installed Samba and set up a share, which my ChromeBox found immediately. Maybe I'll just stick a couple of big drives in the USB 3 slots and call it a NAS, lol.

Loving the integration with Allmusic, though a lot of jazz titles aren't found, not sure why. Some are, which is quite nice, and links are provide to drill down into Allmusic for further reading. Pics don't always show up, but that's a minor quibble.

Only downside I've found with LMS is lack of integration/plugins to Amazon HD music, which isn't a deal breaker for me as I don't use it (yet).

I have my Pi set up the same way, with LMS loaded and a hard drive plugged into it, and everything works flawlessly. I run DietPi for the OS.

I really need to get a proper NAS for photo storage, will look into them. Any NAS suggestions welcome!
I've been very happy housing LMS on a Synology 718+ with 6GB memory and a pair of Seagate 2TB drives running RAID 1. I wanted a fairly robust quad core processor and memory expansion. While it voids the warranty, you can replace the 2 GB and 4 GB DIMMs with dual 4s or 8s if you really want some cache space. :)

Recommend you use the LMS packages available here:

https://sourceforge.net/projects/lmsupdate/files/DSM6.x/

Running it directly into the Ampino and the 1c’s now .....

Verdict - it does what it’s supposed to do .
WiFi connection , streaming tidal natively via its app ...
Sounds pretty damn good for 60 bucks ...

Not as good as the wxc-50 into the Ampino .. depth , soundstage , separation and imaging not as good , but wholly acceptable for 60 bucks .
I’m sure the internal dac is not nearly as good as the wxc-50’s , which is pretty good from what I gather .

It DOES sound noticeably better using the Mconnect app streaming Tidal via UpNP....
It will stream Tidal high Rez using Mconnect app.

Has plenty of output voltage to drive the Ampino.

Overall , it’s certainly not an audiophile grade device ( wouldn’t expect it to be ) , but it certainly would be great for a secondary system - garage , bedroom , kitchen etc...

It does not have a network standby function, and no on/off ability from the app .
It does have a sleep timer however ...

It does have analog rca out, digital coax and optical out , subwoofer out ,
3.5mm in - for iPhone I presume , and a wired LAN input.
Lots of functionality.

App is ok , although there are other apps in App Store that are better and work.

Body is cheap plastic.

‘Ya get what ‘ya pay for I guess ...

It’s a keeper for what I intend it to do - provide an inexpensive source for the Ampino that’s in my sons room....
