Wiring in an IEC power socket

I plan on installing an IEC power socket on my Magnavox 9302. Does it matter which wire is positive or negative. Also do I solder the ground to the chassis. Thanks for the help.

Adding a chassis ground where none existed in previous design is always controversial.

On the back of the IEC socket the L and N terminals should be marked. If the amp currently has a polarized plug then the wire going to the narrow blade should go to the L terminal and the wire on the wide blade should go to the N terminal.

If it is currently non polarized then, generally, you'd want any sort of switch and fuse to be connected to the L terminal.

There can be other twists too, with caps from L to chassis or N to chassis, etc.
