Yamaha CR-2040 Clean Up

Thanks Avionic, I thought maybe glue, but it looks kind sloppy. Also, knowing the history of this receiver I thought it might also be a spill. Any ideas or suggestion on how best to enlarge the the mounting holes on the PCB, or make the solder lugs smaller on the replacements?

Trim the cap? OK, I think I can do, But the tabs are a just a bit to thick for the slots, so I think I'll nee to do some fine filing.

Make sure you eradicate all that glue first.Look over all the component leads that the glue was slopped on.That glue tends to promote corrosion on any metallic surface.
 
Well, it's been four months since my last post, and I've just been able to get back to this project in the last week or so. It's finished, almost. All the boards are recapped, including the 2 big caps in the power supply. The DC offset and idle current adjustments are done and source voltage is set. This receiver sounds great over speakers. The muddy sound quality is gone. Now the "almost". When listening with headphones I notice a VERY faint hum on the left channel. This hum is only there on Phono, not on AM, FM, Aux or either Tape input. The hum is only audible at pretty hi volume levels, and unless I turn the volume up almost all the way it can't be heard on speakers. I've double checked the phono board and everything looks OK. Any suggestion on what to check for, or how to trouble shoot this?

Hi Avionic, and thanks for the suggestion. I'm using an MM cartridge, the turntable I'm using at my bench doesn't have an external ground wire and I don't have any other ground at my bench. I moved the CR-2040 to my listening room and and hooked it up to my Yamaha YP-D8 which does have an external ground wire. Also using a newer MM cartridge. The hum or buzz is gone! I sometimes hear a sort of white noise on the same channel, but I'm not hearing it now. I think I need to go over the controls with some Deoxit again.

Avionic, and everyone else, thanks for your help and suggestions over the 2 plus years I've been working on this project (I clearly have too many things going on). I truly appreciate AK AudioKarma and all the great AKers out there.
 
Ok, so I've been listening to the Yamaha for over 2 years now, man how time flies! Last week I put headphones on to listen and I heard a not so faint noise (white noise?) coming from both channels. I fiddled with the controls and the noise volume stayed constant. The volume and balance controls had no effect, and the noise was constant as I selected different inputs, even muted FM. Now when I listen to the speakers with no input source I can hear that same noise, faint but definitely there. I need to open the receiver to try to clean one of the selector switches better and I want to look for the source of this new noise. Any suggestions?

If speakers sound good.. You likely have a broken connection to the HP jacks or a cracked PCB in that general area.Or the phone jacks are both broken.
 
Thanks for the replies Avionic. Both headphone jacks sound the same, and the headphones work well with my Marantz 2240 receiver. I also have a Bluetooth transmitter so I can use my Samsung earbuds and I hear the noise on the Yamaha, but not on the Marantz.

Avionic, The sound from my speakers and headphones is equally good. The noise I'm hearing is present whether I'm listening to speakers or headphones, it's faint but there. It's just more pronounced when listening to headphones.

Do you hear it if AUX or TAPE is selected ? Does this sound like crosstalk ?
 
Hi, it wouldn't be your Bluetooth transmitter interfering with your Yamaha would it? The Marantz may not be as sensitive?
 
Avionic, I hear the noise regardless of any of the selector switch positions, Record Out (Tape Copy, Tuner, Phono, Aux, Pre Out) Input Selector (Tape 1-2, Tuner, Phono, Aux) or Phono Selector (MC Amp, 33k, 47k 68k, 100k). The noise is not effected by the volume setting, with no input (Phono, Tape, Aux) the noise is equal form 0 to max, and on Tuner with FM muting on the noise is still the same. The Tone controls do effect the sound, and so does the balance control.
