Yamaha NS-1000 what solid state would suite

I think any of the VINTAGE NADs will sound good 3140/3150, 2200. I'm not talking about the newer home theater stuff. Any old Luxman power amp or integrated would be good. Nikko Alpha, Hitachi HMA- series, Threshold 400.... there is quite a list of amps that will not produce tizzy highs and provide high quality sound.

I just bought a local pair today for $850 cdn ($680 usd). They are in very good condition with the exception of one grill being poked in a bit, and a couple of marks on one cabinet. No front covers however.
The listening demo was with a vintage Marantz tube amp, EL-34's, 35 wpc. Very good soundstage and so precise. Bass wasn't as bad as I had been led to believe.
My reference speakers are Wilson Sophia 2's and these sounded very good indeed comparatively, though much different.
Anyone have any comment on grills? Is it worth trying to build a pair? Probably not eh?

What about integrated? Any thoughts there?

The best I have ever heard my NS-1000 sound was when driven by a Luxman L-450 integrated amp. They sounded better on the Luxman than when driven by a SAE 2400L, Onkyo M504, Rogue Audio M120 tube monoblocks, Carver M400 and Yamaha M85. I can't explain it, they just do.. FWIW. I absolutely love them on the Lux.

I have heard that the Yamaha Ns-1000 are best suited to the Yamaha B-1/B-2 amp.

What other solid state amps would suit?

Im currently using a Pioneer sx-1050, but i dont think this is the best option for the Ns-1000. The reason i say this is that a pair of Pioneer cs-60 speakers sound so much better then the Ns-1000.

What options do i have?
The NS-1000 is not a good sounding speaker, its an accurate one. It and the NS-2000 have been the only speakers I've ever been able to hear the difference between an original bought CD and a "lossless" copy on a harddrive made with the same drive. So far the Be drivers from JM measurably match the Yamahas and have higher extension but sadly to date do not exceed them in any other way but hopefully will.

I'm using mine now with a MX-1000U and the bass is solid and mid-range is smooth with large soundstage. However, I will note it doesn't bring out the best of what the 1000M can do. I get the impression this amp was designed to sound warm with that servo-based Class A. I now have the option to purchase a MX-10000 Centennial amplifier that might make a good combo with a Tom Evans lithos pre, could be interesting.

Congrats on the speakers! I made a little hook out of a paper clip and carefully pulled the grilles on two of my drivers back into shape. :thmbsp:

They sound excellent with large SS amps...For quite a few years I ran my NS-1000's with a Yamaha M-4(120wpc) ..Then a M-45(125wpc)... Obtained a nother set of NS-1000M's.Ran them with a second M-45 and a Yamaha C-4 pre. Then I built a couple (190wpc) DIY MOSFET amps. The sound difference was like night and day..For the better!.

ESP P101
High Power Version
The same PCB is used, but has an extra pair of MOSFETs. Since the devices are running in parallel, source resistors are used to force current sharing. Although these may be replaced by wire links, I do not recommend this. This version may be operated at a maximum supply voltage of +/-70V, and will give up to 180W RMS into 8 ohms, and 250W into 4 ohms. Short term (peak) power is around 240W into 8 ohms and 380W into 4 ohms. These figures are very much dependent on your power supply regulation, determined by the VA rating of the transformer, size of filter caps, etc.
800VA toroidal transformers with over 50,000uf of filter capacitance per +/- 70vdc rail.

 That's some seriously sweet DIY amplification you have going on over there! I'd love to give that a good listening to. :thmbsp: :D

About a month ago I was listening to my system at elevated levels when I decided that I needed to back off my sub a bit. When I got up and grabbed the remote for it, I realized it wasn't on. All the bass I was hearing was coming out of the NS-1000Ms. That surprised me quite a bit, actually. They're definitely not what I'd consider a house rattling speaker, although I've had heater vents humming along to the music.

I never noticed much movement out of the woofers, but have had some music that had them exhibiting noticeable travel. I've never really pushed them with anything other than my MX-1, so I don't know how they would perform with a lower power amp. I'm a little paranoid about going into clipping and damaging the tweeters/mids, so I'm not likely to use anything else in the foreseeable future.

As for the grilles, well, they're not necessary from a functionality standpoint, so I suppose it comes down to whether you can live without them. Naturally they'll enhance the value of the speakers somewhat. The speakers themselves are somewhat loud from a visual perspective, but that doesn't bother me so I leave the grilles off, mainly because I've got a cat that might enjoy hanging off of them.

Did you buy a pair of the 1000s, or the 1000Ms? The 1000s look considerably better than the Ms in my opinion.

You got a pretty good deal on the speakers, actually, if they're in good condition. If you find you want the grilles for them, there are quite a few NS-1000Ms out there, and finding a pair might take a little time, but isn't out of the question. The NS-1000 grilles, though, would not be an easy find.

I've driven mine with a lot of different amps and receivers. What sounds the absolute best with the 1000M's to my ears are the Bryston 4b NRB, Yamaha B-2 and Yamaha MX-2000.
What absolutely doesn't work to my ears are the big Sansui G series receivers (I've tried a G-8, G-9 and G-22K)...like fingernails down a chalkboard.

Let see if I understand you correctly. So what you're saying then is the Brystons and the Yammies sound great but the Sansuis grate sound? :scratch2: :D

So many AKers have lauded the synergy of the NS-1k and the vfets. I can understand why a B-1 may be out of the running due to availabitity and pricing, but why not use a B-2 and sit back and listen to Yammy at its best?

OP, what is your speaker placement and attenuator settings? Both of these make a big difference in the sound of the NS1000, more so than amplification (to an extent). They like their backs right up against the wall and about 12" off the ground. With SS I have to go a least -3db on the tweets. What about the CS-60s sound way better than the Yammies?

It is the NS-1000, not the M, that I bought; and to clarify, they are missing the front covers, not the grills. Other than the one grill being punched in a bit, they are in good shape. So only the covers are missing, which probably isn't of much concern.

You know the NS-1000 didn't have the woofer grills like the M has? Some owners removed all the metal grills because they believed it improved the speaker.

BX-1 Amp

I do not know much about this mono BX-1 amp, but it has an interesting design with a toroidal transformer. How about a pair driving the NS-1000?
