Yamaha NS-1000 what solid state would suite

Ns-1000

OP, what is your speaker placement and attenuator settings? Both of these make a big difference in the sound of the NS1000, more so than amplification (to an extent). They like their backs right up against the wall and about 12" off the ground. With SS I have to go a least -3db on the tweets. What about the CS-60s sound way better than the Yammies?

The Pioneer cs-60s have a very different sound then the Ns-1000s, more bass, maybe 'untrue' base. The option is to hook up a sub, but i would have no idea how to do that on a receiver or standard amp?

Currently i have my Ns-1000 about 10cm away from the wall, i think i need to move them closer to get more bass.

Just going out to buy a second pair of Ns-1000s in the ebony finish which are mint.

Could it be M's I bought then? There is no M on the speaker, just NS-1000. Perhaps a previous owner installed the grills.

You know the NS-1000 didn't have the woofer grills like the M has? Some owners removed all the metal grills because they believed it improved the speaker.

As a few of you probably know, I have been running my NS-1000M with a Pioneer A-91D intergrated because my B-2 was having a midlife crisis :D

Anyway, I only have praise for the Pioneer, it has done an excellent job and is very solidly built too. I havent quite finished fiddling with my B-2, but will very soon, expect a comparsion between the two at that point.

Interesting. I just acquired a Pioneer A-27, just got it hooked up for the first time this morning. I haven't tried it on my 1000M's yet but I definitely will later on today. What a wickedly good amp this A-27 is :thmbsp:

I've driven mine with a lot of different amps and receivers. What sounds the absolute best with the 1000M's to my ears are the Bryston 4b NRB, Yamaha B-2 and Yamaha MX-2000.
What absolutely doesn't work to my ears are the big Sansui G series receivers (I've tried a G-8, G-9 and G-22K)...like fingernails down a chalkboard.

Agreed, receivers in general don't sound good with the NS-1000M. I've tried my Marantz 2500 and a CR-3020 and neither sounded good. The only receiver that sounds decently good with NS-1000M's is the Concept 16.5.

The NS-1000 woofers do not have the metal grill. I've always wondered whether the metal grills on my NS-1000M's reflect sound energy. Could removing them sharpen the bass even more?

The M's are all black with metal protecting grille covers on all 3 drivers. The non M's are a deep ebony brown with black wood grain and no protection grille cover on the woofer.

And the non-M has a slightly larger cabinet which is said to give more bass.

True, the M and non-M spec the same. According to the manual, the non-M is fractionally bigger and 17 pounds heavier. This extra volume should give fractionally better bass. One of these days, I'll get my hands on some non-M's and do a proper A/B.

The NS-1000 will make average amps sound worse and great amps sound better. Amp must be fast and accurate. Look for high damping factor and slew rate specifications.
I am under the impression that any decent amplifier is "fast" enough for any hi-fi application. Also, that damping factor isn't nearly as important as I used to think it is.

It would have to be pretty bloody thick. Check out the amount of blockage caused by the grills in these VERY expensive bass speakers:

I honestly think it could, seriously. But I also think it would be purely psychological. I'm dead serious when I say this. I did all sorts of stuff like that in my late teens and swore I heard a difference. I didn't though. I just wanted to and "imagined" a clearer sound without grill cloths, etc.

Speed has everything to do with attack and decay. In general, the faster the amp, the better the clarity.

Perhaps. I'm pretty happy with the way things are now. One of these days, I'll have the non-M and have a definitive answer.

I used to sell those speakers "back in the day". They were one of my favorites. In fact, if I hadn't opted for the ESS AMT 1B Monitors bi-amped, the Yamahas were second.

I sort of see "fast" the same as I see the word "warm". I think of it as a subjective term more than a real parameter.

Keep in mind, I am speaking of normal high quality equipment, not Lloyds.

This is an interesting discussion of amplifier speed and slew rate.

The NS 1000's are definitely accurate enough to expose amplifier weakness in this area though, I suspect.

Fractionally more volume filled with more damping material. I too would love to do a proper A/B.

Trying to decide what to get with the Ns-1000 is a bit of a challenge, but here is my thoughts

b-1/b-2 yamaha would be good but concerned about the vfets going and ever finding replacements

M-2 yamaha sounds good and repariable - I prefer this over the M-4 as it has much more power

MX-1 yamaha could work, but all a bit to new?

I think it will be the M-2

Have you considered tubes? I matched my Ns1000M with a Jolida JD502B integrated and prefer the sound over every SS I've tried. I was even pleasantly surprised by the low end.
