no mention of the chip that looks like a logic chip in the write up unless i missed it ...

Then again if we're talking integrated you can get the Marantz 2600/2500 or Pioneer 1980 and be absolutely happy as a pig in mud with the money you saved. Both provide enough oomph to each channel and looks good doing it.

Well for at least a year or so, then more deoxit and or service, over and over. Most of the time...
 
I like the design and build, but it looks strikingly familiar. No switching supply, not all loaded up with linear ICs, power modules, and other modern mediocrity. It does seem a bit over-priced, however.

Oh, what the heck - they are $1,000 off right now. Just add it to your Yamaha cart and go!

Yeah I'd go with the Marantz or Pioneer as well get em recapped and still have money left over and be good for another 40 years.

And it specs about the same as an SX-1080 for range, distortion, and separation at its rated 100WPC RMS. The SX-1080 was $749 in 1980, which is about $2,187.00 in 2016 dollars, (http://data.bls.gov/cgi-bin/cpicalc.pl?cost1=749&year1=1980&year2=2016) so its price point is about 3-4 times its comparative value.

And there is no wood on it.

Whether one regards it as good value or the opposite, the sound quality is said to be superb. If I had eyes for one I'd be hoping for a 2nd hand cast off.
 
To maintain a purely Yamaha perspective, its performance in every category (except number of inputs) is slightly below that of the CR-2040, which sold for $840.00 in 1980, or $2,450.00 today. Granted, there are no plants cranking out 400 of these units a day as was the case back then, but robots work more cheaply than manned assembly lines.

Despite the changes in technology, manufacturing, and pricing, it's refreshing to note that the same level of double-speak marketing bullshit has been maintained at 1980's levels:

"The top panel and the front panel are made of aluminum, a non-magnetic material, in order to eliminate any adverse effect on the audio signals."

Ask Sorgel, Siemens, GE, Emerson and Acme about the use of alumininum in transformer construction - and those are purely magnetic devices in lower frequencies.
